Apple doesn’t oppose third party iPhone programs development

As we suspected before, Apple is indeed using the “live and let live” stance with the undergound iPhone programmers community.

Although Apple’s iPhone (and the new iPod touch) is officially locked out to third party programmers, the underground programmers community already counts several hundred freelance programmers that created hundreds of iPhone programs they think the device should have, to be distributed freely for everyone.

Since earlier this year Apple’s legal went after programmers that made iPhone skins and interfaces for other mobiles, it was feared that Apple will go after the underground programmers themselves, which causes some of them to identify themselves only by nicknames.

However, all the extra programs that they make for free for the iPhone (which would cost Apple a lot of money and manhours to make) certainly bring up the allure of the iPhone to potential customers — for example, one of our readers, a long time Palm user, stated he bought the iPhone after he knew that he can read eBooks with freeware books.app on it.

According to GearLog, Apple’s marketing VP Greg Joswiak said that Apple doesn’t oppose native application development. As a matter of fact “Apple takes a neutral stance - they’re not going to stop anyone from writing apps, and they’re not going to maliciously design software updates to break the native apps, but they’re not going to care if their software updates accidentally break the native apps either“.

At the same time, Apple will not officially support the third party programmers community, so don’t expect any programming toolkits anytime soon. And lastly, according to Apple “software updates will most likely break” third party iPhone applications — although it won’t be done on purpose (or so we hope).

Free iPhone Unlocker Beta

As one of the readers pointed out (thanks KeanosMagicHat), there is now an available version of the iPhone software unlocker by the #iphone-dev team. But it’s a very early beta version based on preliminary code that #iphone-dev folks urge you not to download (and also promise to release a final version soon).

Although we knew of the existence of HaRRo’s iPhone unlock.app (which is what this beta software iPhone unlocker is called) we didn’t want to post it at #iphone-dev request, but what some readers know others should too…

iphone unlocker beta

With a little warning from #iphone-dev team, stating:

HaRRo is distributing a GUI application resulting from stolen source code of a pre-release gui application to truncate the doantions of months of development work now to him with this application. For this reason all links to it have been removed and he was supended from all op duties on IRC as well. If you made a donation to him, use paypal to get your money refunded. If you want to make a donation to the real cause, go to forum and check the dev team news for a trustworthy address to send your contributions.

Followed by a disclaimer…

Disclaimer
This is beta so run at your own risk!
It should not do any damage to your phone anyway because you can easily reflash all the old original files.
And you should not break any warranty. Would also be a good idea to backup any files you might need just incase! Dont blame me!

So if you still want to download this iPhone software unlocker go ahead and do so — hopefully you did read the warning and the disclaimer.

Direct download:
- HaRRo’s (actually #iphone-dev’s) iPhone GUI software unlocker BETA (3.5MB) use at your own risk
- iUnlock (19KB)
- Rread what both files are for below as posted by HaRRo.

New iPhone accessories from iGoneMobile

iGoneMobile has announced that they have released some additions to their list of accessories for the iPhone. The new accessories are made for in-car or on the go use.

“Our new iPhone accessories provides customers great quality products at affordable prices that will allow them to utilize all the features of the iPhone on the go,” said Marketing Manager Nikki Sutphin.

Apple iPhone Car Stereo Link Cable
The Apple iPhone was designed to have a recessed port which resulted in existing iPod cables to be incompatible. Due to customer requests, iGoneMobile has developed a full line of cables to accommodate the iPhone special port design. The iGoneMobile stereo link cable will allow you to play your iPhone in your car with the same MP3 stereo quality. The stereo link cable has a smaller housing which will allow the cable to fit into the iPhone’s unique port. The cable will also connect the iPhone to speakers, car stereos and any other audio products that is compatible with the 3.5mm. The retractable feature makes the cable easy to store and will prevent cable tangles while driving.

Apple iPhone 3.5mm Stereo Headset Adapter
As a result of the recessed port, users are having a difficult time with using a standard 3.5mm jack for their iPhone. The iGoneMobile headset adapter will allow any standard 3.5mm jack to be used on the iPhone. Also, the headset adapter is sleek and convenient to use as the cord is flexible. The headset adapter also has special features such as on and off button to end your call, a volume control, and stereo sound quality.

Apple iPhone Replacement Battery
Aside from the iPhone cable line, iGoneMobile also developed an iPhone replacement battery. All iPhone users have one year replacement coverage if the battery drops to 50% of the original capacity. After this one year runs out, there is a battery replacement program where you pay almost $90. As a different option, iGoneMobile has made a do-it-yourself battery replacement available in their family of iPhone accessories. The battery is complete with tools and instruction to help the user replace their own battery at the comfort of their own home.
