We know it’s coming, hanging over our heads like an oncoming thunderstorm. The iPhone’s first major software update is on its way this month, bringing spiffy new features like the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. But what other advantages will it confer upon the iPhone-using masses?
Apparently some of the phones demonstrated at this morning’s event in London were running the new software, suggesting that its release is imminent. Engadget snapped some pictures, including one which shows off a preference setting for what happens when you double-click the iPhone’s home button. Right now, of course, it’ll simply take you home. But in the new firmware, you’ll also have the option to display the iPod controls (à la the iPod touch) or take you to your phone favorites (I think I can hear several of my colleagues jumping for joy).
Or, if you’re a traditionalist, it can continue to take you just back to the home screen. There’s also an option to have it bring up the iPod controls when you’re actively playing music.
There’s some other info hinted at in the shots as well. For example, it appears that the 1.1.1 firmware will support both closed captions on video and the ability to output to a TV (perhaps those store listings weren’t typos, but just a case of jumping the gun). And, of course, there’s support for International keyboard settings, similar we’d guess to that on the touch.
What other wonders does the new iPhone firmware hold? We won’t know until it drops, but I’m still jonesing for the iTunes Wi-Fi Store. That’s taking impulse purchases to a whole new level.

Erica at TUAW does some quick and dirty math on how many iPhone hackers are out there. Based on 60k SSH downloads, and that being a fraction of those who hack, she guesses 10-20% of all Apple phone users are doing some sort of unofficial cha cha with unofficial apps. [TUAW]
