Rumor: Apple releasing slate touchscreen device

Could it be another go at the Newton? Could it be My iTablet? Or could it be a MacBook Touch? Maybe an Apple UMPC?

Apple Newton

Right now no one knows for sure, what is known is that there are reports of a touchscreen device that is larger than the iPhone with a bigger, better, multi-touch touchscreen. What is also known is that the engineers from this project have on occasion taken time off from this project to work on the iPhone, which means to some extent, they are interchangeable. It could be an Apple UMPC, wouldn’t that be great. (more…)

Truphone to demonstrate first VoIP-over-WiFi call on Apple’s iPhone

Truphone breaks new ground. SV

Key facts

iPhone demonstration

1. Many people have called for true VoIP calling on Apple's iPhone. Truphone will today prove that it is possible using the iPhone's in-built Wi-Fi capability.
2. Truphone's demonstration will comprise two iPhones connected to Wi-Fi on the DEMOfall 07 stage. A VoIP call will be initiated from one handset, routed via Wi-Fi and the Internet to Truphone's servers, and then back again to the access point and onwards to the destination handset - a 100% IP phone call.
3. Today's event will be a live demonstration only and is not a commercial launch of Truphone on the iPhone.
4. Truphone does not need to unlock the SIM in order to operate its service for the iPhone.

Facebook demonstration

1. The company will also give a demonstration today of an application that mashes up social networking site Facebook with traditional telephony. The big differentiator between Truphone's demonstration and other applications for Facebook is that Truphone is the only one to embed an actual phone into the very heart of Facebook.
2. Facebook users will be able to drop their Truphone 'Call Me' button onto their friends' Walls and also embed it into Facebook messages. People will be able to allow other people to call them, while keeping their actual number confidential.
3. The Truphone 'Call Me' button for Facebook to be demonstrated today showcases the potential for additional innovative services enabled by Truphone's all-IP internet telephony infrastructure.
4. Truphone's Facebook application is currently in development.

New Zealand remains iPhone-less

It seems Vodafone, NZ’s only GSM carrier, has no plans to carry the phone anytime soon.

Vodafone’s spokesman, Paul Brislen, said that it’s unlikely that any talks will happen to bring the phone to the region. “It’s a watching brief but it is not on Vodafone New Zealand’s road map for the rest of the year, and it could be years before we see it here, if we ever do,” he stated.

The iPhone, even without a retailer supplying the demand, has managed to sneak into the 3 million cellphone users locally. Apparently there’s only one importer of the phone, and a business supplying a Sim card (which retails near the price of the iPhone itself) to enable access to the Vodafone’s network.

Overall, Australians and New Zealanders might need to wait together with Canadians for iPhone v2.0…

Google Calendar Update and Credit-check Bypassing

Monday, Google released a new update to the Google Calendar system. This update caters the calendar and interface directly to the iPhone. iPhone users can already see the update here.

“It is now tailored for the iPhone, and you can now see your different calendars in distinctive colors.” says the Google Calendar team.

Another bit of info from Apple indicates that users can now skip the credit check performed when activating an iPhone. The new system is i-Tunes-based and allows users to activate, as well as change their phone number to a different carrier. Normally, the iPhone activation process requires a social security number, but this new system supplies a code that allows you to bypass the credit check, but still allow you to choose a service plan. The code, however, has a possible downside. It requires that users either pay for a pre-paid plan, or put up to a $1000 security deposit down.

Apple says iPhone hacking means void warranty, possibly damage

Monday, in a statement by Apple, it was said that if you attempt to unlock your iPhone, it could result in less-than-desirable consequences.

Apple went on to state that they are fully against it, and plan to release software updates that will disable the iPhone if it is hacked in any way, shape, or form, including third-party applications.

“Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed,” says Apple.

Apple went on to say that the next software update is scheduled for later this week, including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.
