Apple Requires AT&T Plan For iPhone Repairs

A word of warning to iPhone owners with no AT&T service: It looks like Apple isn't honoring any 2 year guarantees, or for that matter 90-day service plans, for owners not owning the manditory 2-year AT&T plan for their iPhone. Apparently they are treating all iPhones not currently subscribed to the AT&T network as ordinary iPods, as iPhone owner Jake Dugard found out the hard way.

UK customers getting ready to buy their iPhone.

As it’s known the official date when iPhone is going to appear on the British market was set to 9th of November.

However British Apple iPhone fans can already register on the internet site www.o2update.com in order to receive updates about iPhone’s arrival. Official O2 internet site says that iPhone will be available from three distributors, that is, Carphone Warehouse, O2 retail stores and Apple retail stores.

There will be a chance to order an iPhone on-line from from O2 Online, Carphone Warehouse and the Apple Online Store.

As indicated on O2’s site, in order to give everyone a chance of buying America’s “God machine”, there will be a limit of two handsets per customer buying an iPhone on-line as well as in-store. And also O2 will not accept cash, so customers without a credit or debit card wont be given a chance to buy an iPhone.

Malicious iPhone TIFF Exploit Hack Details

H.D. Moore, a blogger who became a quite a well known researcher on iPhone’s security, has recently released TIFF exploit documentation - this allows to ‘control’ an already modified iPhone. The exploit is based on how iPhone’s Safari browser reads TIFF image files.

Libtiff, the iPhone’s native home program for reading and writing TIFF files, is what the iPhone TIFF exploit is targeting. The overall exploit requires a specific shell code to be run on the iPhone in question, before it can be hacked. This can be done with H.D. Moore’s Metasploit Framework pen-testing tool, which includes the shellcode (though this only works on iPhones that are allowed to use ‘extra’ tools — jailbreaked ones).

“This exploit works great on modified iPhones that have an existing /bin/sh, but will fail on unmodified iPhones,” Moore said. This isn’t even the end, as Moore promises an even larger update: cracking unmodified iPhones with his shellcode. You can find his guide here. We are not responsible if you somehow damage or irrepairably modify your (or someone else’s) iPhone.

Greenpeace: iPhone Not Green - Hazardous Chemicals Included

Despite the campaign launched by Greenpeace in May of this year accusing Apple of not respecting the environment enough, at the time Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs claimed that “Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors” in terms of environmental issues in hardware.

Well, it appears to be that’s not quite the case at the moment, as proved by Greenpeace’s latest study. An independent scientific laboratory had tested 18 individual internal and external iPhone pieces, like the antennae. Among this, the plastic on the iPhone headphone cables showed up with a 1.5% make-up of phthalates. For those who don’t know, or weren’t aware, Phthalates (Wiki) is a toxic substance used in nail polish, caulk, adhesives, or other miscellaneous items that you’d normally not ingest.

Zeina Alhajj, Greenpeace’s toxics campaigner, says “Steve Jobs has missed the call on making the iPhone his first step towards greening Apple’s products,” and goes on to say that “It seems that Apple is far from leading the way for a green electronics industry as competitors, like Nokia, already sell mobile phones free of PVC”.

A senior scientist for Greenpeace also commented, with direct information about how harmful this actually is: “Two of the phthalate plasticisers found at high levels in the headphone cable are classified in Europe as ‘toxic to reproduction, category 2′ because of their long-recognized ability to interfere with sexual development in mammals.” He went on to say, “While they are not prohibited in mobile phones, these phthalates are banned from use in all toys or childcare articles sold in Europe. Apple should eliminate the use of these chemicals from its products range.”

The iPhone Examination

As for Apple’s competition: Nokia is confirmed to be toxic-free, while Sony Ericsson as well as Motorola use products that are BFR-free (Brominated Flame Retardant (Wiki), another type of toxin found on the iPhone). Nokia and Sony Ericcson have a global take-back policy so the products are recyclable and reusable, unlike (at the moment) Apple.

At the same time, it’s unknown whether Apple knowingly used toxic components in the iPhone, whether it was some sort of miscalculation, or just the fault of the Chinese parts suppliers — the latter being absolutely possible in light of all the recent Chinese products’ recalls. It’s also unknown whether all the iPhones contain the same amount of toxic materials, or whether only certain batches were “contaminated”.

As to whether or not you’ll become impotent by using the iPhone, we can’t say for sure (yet, anyway). We can however, state, that there obviously isn’t a serious health risk from using the iPhone, other than the usual ‘cellphones give you cancer’ story that pops up every now and then. The warnings here are mainly that the iPhone and other Apple products aren’t 100% safe to recycle, so no worries. If you are interested in the plight against environmentally unfriendly products, feel free to visit Greenpeace’s website.
