O2 Removes Unlimited Data Restriction For iPhone

The UK iPhone launch is just days away and O2 is already showing how different they are from AT&T. While there was initially controversy around their 200 megabyte "fair use" data transfer policy intended to keep users from overusing their internet connections, they have sided with the consumers and gotten rid of the policy.

Would going to France to buy an iPhone pay off?

In France, by a consumer law it is illegal to bind a customer to one service provider only for more than 6 months, and is the only thing keeping the iPhone out of the country.

Therefore in France an iPhone would need to be offered additionally in an unlocked version. Would that cause a wave of iPhone tourists visiting France to lay hands on their coveted, legally unlocked iPhone? Since Apple Inc. has been negotiating its deals with mobile service providers for a long time, that seems unlikely.

Apple has got an exclusive deal with mobile operators from around the world - most of them binding customers for 18 months.
Each operator is paying Apple for that sort of deals to be maintained. Money seems to be a deciding factor even in France, despite very rigid consumer law regulations.

Jody Sanders, managing director of iPhone Unlock UK, seems to be rather skeptical about French bargains. iPhone Unlock has unlocked 2,000 devices in the past three months. Here is what its managing director says:
“They will make the price prohibitive. They’ll find a way to work round the law.”

“It is likely there will be a very low number and the phone will be high in price, in the region of 900 Euros. I would imagine you would have to explicitly ask for them.” she continued, and went on to say, “I can’t see people going to France when it will cost £270 for an iPhone here and £60 to get it unlocked.”

However unbiased iPhone Unlock UK’s opinion may be it remains unlikely for Apple to let France’s consumer laws lessen its revenue.
Of course Apple’s opinion on unlocked handsets is still negative and it warns its customers that unlocking can damage the iPhone’s software.

O2 encourages Internet usage among future iPhone users.

Tired of your internet bandwidth limits? Well, if you get an iPhone in Europe under O2’s ‘unlimited’ plan, you won’t have to worry about it again.

O2 starts selling Apple’s “invention of the year” on next Friday with monthly tariffs from £35 to £55. Initially O2’s plan was to advertise web usage as unlimited with fair usage policy, which is very common among other service providers. That fair usage in reality means 200 megabits per month.

Although, according to O2, an average data usage for mobile users is only 5 megabits per month, the feedback from them shows that they would feel more comfortable having no limits at all. As O2 UK chief executive Matthew Key said: ‘’Customers find ‘unlimited with limits’ confusing, plus most people don’t speak in megabits or understand what they equate to.”

‘’So we’ve taken the decision to remove the fair usage cap so that ‘unlimited’ really does mean ‘unlimited’ – this is a market first.” he continued. The unlimited access to the Internet, however, has been destined for non-commercial users who won’t use their iPhone’s internet capability.

We think that will encourage iPhone users to surf more on the web, which may even help to develop new web technologies.

O2 hopes to sell 200,000 Phones over this Christmas.

According to the latest on Orange, the company estimates that the iPhone may sell up to 200,000 handsets during this Christmas and New Year season in the UK.

O2 chief executive Matthew Key expects “a couple of hundred thousand” to be sold during the first two months after the official launch which is to take place on next Friday, Nov. 9th. Besides O2, the iconic handset will be sold by Carphone and Apple itself. Matthew Key added that 02 had ordered “hundreds of thousands” of iPhones from Apple for stores and online outlets run by 02 and Carphone.

However impressive O2’s estimates would be, other analysts say that iPhone sales potential is much bigger. Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner, a consultancy, said between 350,000 and 400,000 iPhones could be sold in the first two months. iPhone rivals like Motorola’s Razr and Sony Ericsson’s Cybershot and Walkman phones, have caused a similar interest among mobile users. Their sale numbers weren’t, however, as impressive as those of an iPhone.

iPhone’s weak side in comparison with it’s competitors maybe the fact that it is operating on 2.5G mobile networks, which are slower than its 3G rivals. Mr. Key says that Apple should be ready to present iPhone’s 3G version in the second half of 2008.
