T-Mobile to start Germany’s iPhone sale in Cologne, at one shop, at midnight.

T-mobile has decided to offer the iPhone in only one shop on release, first. Apparently German mobile operator is preparing itself to create a PR event on a big scale, like the one on the first day of iPhone’s US sale.

The shop that is chosen is the Telekom-Shop at 83 Schildergasse Street. The official iPhone sale will start there right after midnight on November 9, 2007. The rest of Germany will have to wait until regular opening hours of about 700 remaining retail outlets. Allegedly there are some impatient customers who are planning to visit Cologne just to buy their coveted handset. They will be traveling for up to 22 hours by bus from Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.

T-mobile has announced that it has made all possible preparations to protect its customers who decided to wait for their hand-set during the night from cold autumn weather. The retail staff has also been specially trained to cope with “iPhone-rush” of impatient customers.

Despite of other retailers attempts to win the right to sell iPhone in Germany (eg. Gravis, Karstadt), T-mobile remains the only iPhone distributor.
The “Kult Handy” will be offered in Germany to those iPhone fans who will decide to sign two year’s contract with T-mobile. They will chose from three tariff plans costing 49,-€, 69,- € or 89,- €. The hand-set itself will cost 399,-€. The T-mobile activation fee for iPhone amounts to 25,-€.

New iPhone Firmware Incoming

Apple reported recently that the new iPhone firmware, v1.1.2, will be coming, even as soon as Friday Nov. 9th - coincidentally the same expected release date of the UK’s receiving of the iPhone.

Also expected was that the new firmware would break most or all hacks done in v1.1.1, like the TIFF exploit that we’ve covered so much.

When the v1.1.1 Firmware was released, several iPhones got ‘bricked’ and were unusable, until hackers came along with new programs and exploits to reverse the installation, as well as even fixing the TIFF exploit in the process. The last firmware also caused alot of legal drama due to the ‘breaking’ of illegally unlocked phones.

With v1.1.2 setting hackers back, again, we can only wait and see who makes the first decisive move. We’ll bring you more details on v1.1.2 as it comes up, and/or is released.

Greenpeace is planning to spoil iPhone’s launch in Europe.

Greenpeace and other “Green” activists group are trying to force change in the environmental policy on Apple’s product.
They want Apple products to be free of the toxic chemicals, such as brominated flame retardants, that can be found in its American counterparts.

Zeina Alhajj campaign coordinator for Greenpeace says: “The iPhone is a unique product and for us it is a missed opportunity for Apple to combine the innovation of the product with a green performance.”

toxic iphone

Last month, Greenpeace accused Apple of failing to make “early progress” with the iPhone toward the company’s stated goals for eco friendliness. Apple responded by reiterating its intent to make all of it’s products free of hazardous materials by the end of 2008, and stressed all components used in the phone comply with the European Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.

Will Greanpeace activity discourage Apple fans from buying the iPhone?
What seems to be a real concern of European consumers is the fact that the iPhone is not compatible with really fast data rate 3G networks.
To see if any these two factors have a real influence on a potential iPhone buyer’s decision we need to wait until Friday.
