One of the victims of the now in-famous iPhone firmware v1.1.1 were iPhone applications which allowed you to add custom ringtones for free or for a one-time charge. One of the popular ringtone applications that was affected was the MakeRingtoneMaker. According to China Mobile Company CEO, he is in talks with Apple to sell iPhone in China.
In a GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress on Tuesday, Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile’s CEO said that he is not very happy with the current business model Apple has with their customers, which is sharing revenue between headset makers and mobile phone operators.
He (Mr. Jianzhou) claims that the company can maintain the operator-centric model, because of its end-users. Currently Apple gathers a portion of the iPhone subscriber revenue from mobile providers.
Apple is to release the iPhone in Asia by 2008, and China mobile would be a very valuable partner, since it is the largest mobile operator in the world with almost 350 million users. It is interesting to note, that China Mobile is also a member of Google’s Open Handset Alliance, which is a group of mobile and technology leaders that will develop products based on Google’s Android mobile phone platform, which is an upcoming competitor for the iPhone.
