iRiver iPhone Clone

Yet more from CES 2008: electronics manufacturer iRiver presented its iRiver GSM Phone that looks like a pretty bad iPhone clone.

The iRiver GSM Phone (which doesn’t have an official name yet) will be sold unlocked, it will be powered by a Linux based operating system, and like the iPhone will have no keys, making use of a 3-inch, 480×272 touchscreen display.

According to reports the phone will have 4GB of memory, Adobe Flash support, a GPS feature, mobile TV, 2MP camera with camcorder, and music/video players with Rhapsody music support.

It’s also known that unlike the iPhone the phone will work on 3G networks. “It would be ridiculous for the phone to be 2G or 2.5G at this time,” stated iRiver representative Owen Kwon. And it should be cheaper than the iPhone, which is quite obvious from its looks.

Delphi turns your iPhone into a car remote control

Yet another innovation presented at the CES 2008 is Delphi’s Wireless Vehicle Access software that allows you to monitor and control many of your car’s features via your iPhone, remotely, using Bluetooth connection.

Delphi’s Wireless Vehicle Access can locate your car and reports its status on your iPhone for up to a mile away. It allows you to turn on your engine, climate control, and monitor your car’s temperature. It also lets you roll up and down your car’s windows, or even monitor if someone’s inside your car — a good preventive tool against break-ins.

Additionally it’s possible to monitor tires pressure, check how much gas you have left in your tank, and get reports on the status of oil and brake fluids, all from far away, while using your iPhone.

And while at the moment Delphi’s Wireless Vehicle Access is still a concept, we’re quite intrigued to see the final result.

iPhone in Australia? Not anytime soon.

We’ve got some disappointing news for our friends from down under. According to Crazy John’s, Australia’s largest independent mobiles distributor, the iPhone will not show up in Australia anytime soon.

Crazy John’s marketing and sales chief Stephen Morley said “I don’t believe the product is imminent here in Australia.”

At the same time Apple stated that is has plans to release the iPhone in Australia later on this year, but no dates or carrier of choice were named as of yet.

And mobile carrier Vodafone said that it expects the iPhone to arrive in Australia only when a 3G version will become available.

Most handset manufacturers’ range of devices in market are designed to provide customers with high-speed access to content, such as mobile music, mobile TV and entertainment, within coverage areas. Vodafone would be surprised to see an iPhone released in Australia before a 3G or HSPA-enabled model becomes available,” Vodafone’s spokesperson said.

Other Australian carriers and Apple itself did not have any comments to make.

‘Listen’ Song Reconition App

The application Listen, developed by Erica Sadun is nothing new amongst cell phone users of other brands and service providers, but for iPhone users on AT&T, it’s a brand new sight. Listen takes a sample of a song and then looks for it in a song database. Listen then provides a Song Title, Artist, and Album name. Listen lets you search for the song on iTunes or email the information. All listen requires is that you hold the iPhone to the speaker and wait until it’s done recording the 5 second sample.

Quite a few people (like this writer) do not subscribe to or prefer not to use iPhone’s EDGE data plans since free Wi-Fi is well, free. A pretty neat new iPhone web application for people like us was released by Spotigo.

Spotigo’s Wi-Fi hotspot directory contains more than 250.000 hotspots in over 150 countries and now is adapted for the user interface of the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Spotigo offers a comprehensive search interface with a look and feel that users are familiar with from their Apple devices.

It allows them to search for free and commercial hotspots in a certain area country, town, address and / or postal code. The result is displayed in a list where the users can see more details of the hotspot like provider, rates and contact details. The exact location of a certain hotspot can also be displayed on Google maps.

To use the Spotigo iPhone optimized Wi-Fi hotspot directory point your iPhone browser over to iphone.spotigo.net.
