Security experts are seriously concerned with the first iPhone OSX scareware-MacSweeper that we recently reported on, which is basically a Mac version of Cleanator.
As mentioned before the trojan removes third party iPhone applications if you try to remove it. However, it works only on these iPhones that have been modified or opened through a security hole in the system (jailbreaked). Experts’ main concern is not the MacSweeper itself, but more dangerous attacks that can be performed by hackers after they gather more information and gain more experience using that trojan.

As Dian Schaffhauser, an editor at Web Worker Daily writes: “The fear is hackers may be experimenting and gathering research that will increase the dangers of a more malicious attack in the near future.”
Furthermore, she writes that the iPhone should be left on the dresser in the morning. She also offers several reasons why the device isn’t a good corporate tool.

While not really iPhone news, on Tuesday at MacWorld 2008 Apple presented its Time Capsule, a new product created to accompany the Time Machine automatic backup feature of the OS X 10.5. The new OS X Leopard was introduced last October. Its Time Machine automatically backs up the contents of any Mac or other Apple device to an external hard drive.
Time Capsule is a swift combination of an 802.11n network access point and a hard disk drive. As Steve Jobs says: The device is a “full AirPort Extreme base station†combined with “a server-grade hard driveâ€. It allows its users to find and restore lost files or even the whole system.

Apple’s Time Capsule connects to a computer wirelessly through dual-band antennas for 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies. It has one USB 2.0, one Gigabit Ethernet, and three Gigabit LAN ports. Time Machine also offers Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption, and a built-in NAT firewall that support NAT-PMP for Leopard’s Back to My Mac feature. According to Apple, it can connect to print wirelessly from a USB printer. The device has a built-in power supply.
Time Capsule will be available in February in two versions: a 500GB for $299, and a 1TB for $499.

As we all know together with the new v1.1.3 iPhone firmware Steve Jobs announced the Skyhook Wireless’ Wi-Fi location technology in a joint development with Google. And it appears to be competitive to GPS in some areas, at least according to analysts.
As Patrick Connolly, Senior Research Analyst at IMS Research, says: “While GPS is a more accurate technology, when you start moving into inner city urban canyons and indoors, just getting a fix with GPS becomes the issue, not accuracy, as anyone with autonomous GPS will reluctantly admit. GPS fundamentally struggles in these environments, as it was not initially designed for this use case. This isn’t a major problem for sat-nav applications, but as LBS develops, it limits services and deteriorates the user experience.”

“Well implemented Wi-Fi offers the best of both worlds in this environment. Provided there are enough Wi-Fi access points in range, this will not only give you a fix, but comparable accuracy too, at sub 50m. However, it is not all conquering, as WiFi access points are required. This largely limits the technology to urban areas, where Skyhook has a database of access points in place, hence the Google partnership.(…)
Skyhook is very well positioned to benefit, having already established a large access point database and partnerships with the likes of SiRF, Navteq and Intel. However, it is not the only company developing this technology. One of its biggest competitors is Mexens Technology’s Navizon. This is based on a similar concept, however, the Wi-Fi database is user generated, offering rewards to end-users to map access points. There are already 310,000 users signed up to this service, some of which are iPhone users!”
