Unlocked iPhones Costing Apple $300 Million

It looks like Apple has more of an incentive for keeping the iPhone locked than previously expected. Reports by both Marketwatch and Fortune are claiming that the unlocking of iPhones may be costing Apple as much as $300 million in future kickbacks from wireless carriers.

iPhone and iPod Touch SDK Authentication Key

Last night, an anonymous tipster pointed us to this Austin Heap webpage that purportedly reveals the iPhone's secret Application SDK key. Another tipster, also anonymous, then tipped me to iPhone "Elite" developer Zibri's blog, that shows the same key. So what does this mean? Since all iPhone applications must be properly signed for iTunes to process them and for the iPhone to load them, this key suggests that hackers are closer to creating compliant IPA application bundles for home-brew iTunes distribution. With the proper key, developers can create and distribute applications that load through iTunes without Apple's blessing.

Apple Offers Potential Fix for SMS Bug Under 1.1.3 Firmware

Apple Inc. has responded to complaints from customers who say the recent iPhone 1.1.3 software update has caused their handsets to display text messages out of the order in which they were sent or received.

A lengthy Apple Support discussion thread with over 11,000 views and 200 replies has been active on the matter since the firmware update was first made available to iPhone owners following Steve Jobs's Macworld keynote on January 15th.

"Ever since the 1.1.3 update for the iPhone the SMS application seems to be disordering text messages if you exit and then return to the [SMS] application," one AppleInsider reader explained in an email.

Although the vast majority of affected users appear to be using iPhones on O2's wireless network in the UK, the ongoing discussion thread suggests the problem is not limited to a specific carrier.

For its part, Apple last week posted a support article on the matter, explaining that the issue can occur if an iPhone is not displaying the same date and time setting as its carrier network.

The company advises users to make sure their iPhones are setup to receive the network time automatically from their wireless carriers. To do this, users must choose General > Date & Time and turn Set Automatically to ON.

Apple notes, however, that in some locations, network time may not be available and in some cases, users may not see this option. It also admits that the issue may persist for some users even after turning on time synching.

"The issue may be occurring because messages are being sent in quick succession (more common if the messages consist of only a few short words)," the company said.

At least one customer contacting Apple Care support over the matter was told that a definitive fix -- presumably through a successive software update -- was in the works.

Message To All iTouch Owners!

The Official 1.1.3 Jailbreak is out and guides are posted. I don't have an iTouch but from what i hear some people are having trouble with the jailbreak for 1.1.3. They are getting an error. I think the error comes when the SSH is downloading the new firmware onto your iTouch. Its downloading the iPhone firmware instead of the iPod firmware. I don't know if the Dev Team missed that or maybe im wrong, but what i know for a fact is that this particular jailbreak was aimed at the iPhone not the iPod Touch. Stay tuned.I will try to find a loophole. For now if you hav 1.1.1 firmware stay on it. If you have 1.1.2 firmware stay on it. If you have 1.1.3 downgrade to 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 and stay on it FOR NOW.

iPhone SDK Authentication Key Leaked?

According to an anonymous tipster, Apple's iPhone application SDK key that will allegedly be used to authenticate official iPhone apps has been leaked on an Austun Heap webpage. It is expected that the new iPhone applications will have to be authenticated by iTunes in order to be installed onto the device, giving Apple control of what apps are able to be installed on people's iPhones.
