Sun Microsystems is known for many things, but it is probably best known for Java. The promise of Java is that programmers can write an application once and run it on any machine, or device, that has a Java Virtual Machine (a virtual environment that runs on a computer which includes the Java runtime, so that the Java code can run).
That's the promise of Java, sadly, the reality isn't always the same. Java Virtual Machines on different platforms often require special code (which kind of defeats the purpose) and most damning of all (especially on the Mac) is that Java has its own library of UI elements. Unless a Java programmer goes out of their way to make sure their app looks like a native app, it often has an unmistakable 'Java look' to it.
Sun now wants you to have all that Java fun on the iPhone. Shortly after the launch of the iPhone SDK, Sun started looking into the possibility of making a Java VM for the iPhone. After some investigating, they are sure that Java ME (that's the version of Java optimized for mobile devices) on the iPhone is possible and Sun wants to bring it to you. I'm sure there are many Java developers out there are very happy to hear this news.

I did catch this during our liveblog of the SDK talk on Thursday, but just in case you hadn't seen them yet, it seems both the iTunes WiFi store and the calculator will be getting new icons in the iPhone's 2.0 patch. Of course, the App Store will apparently have its own icon as well, and I would assume, at this point, that each app will be able to take its own place on the home screen.
But while the Calculator icon change is kind of a strange one (does this mean the Calc buttons will also be square?), the iTunes change definitely makes sense. That will be the place to download music, while the App Store will be the place to download everything else.

For those who thought the announcements in Thursday's SDK Roadmap Event (such as the possibility of an AIM app) was just a little too good to be true, you might not have been that far off. As developers dive further into Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for the iPhone, restrictions are being found that could stop some apps from being created.
One such restriction found is that no 3rd party apps will be allowed to run in the background, meaning that the idea of replacing SMS with some sort of AIM app or the like will not be possible.

It seems rumors were correct. Now when SDK is out, Gameloft started to "create a strong line-up for 2008" and announced it will bring over 15 titles to the iPhone. At this stage, we don't know which titles they're talking about nor when will they appear. However, something tells us the release of Gameloft's first games will coincide with the iPhone firmware version 2.0 in June. In the mean time, here are the words of Gameloft's president, Michel Guillemot:
"The iPhone gaming environment opens a new era in mobile gaming and is exactly what we've been waiting for. The Apple iPhone has changed the way consumers perceive and interact with their mobile phones, and the release of the SDK is a tremendous opportunity for Gameloft to apply its creative and innovative approach to mobile gaming. Due to our investment in creating one of the most advanced and creative development studios to date, we are ideally positioned today to seamlessly integrate new opportunities and quickly produce games that are as evolutionary as they are enjoyable."
June seems so far, doesn't it?
