Apple sells 1.7 million iPhones in Q2

What a number! In the second fiscal quarter of this year, Apple was able to push a little over 1.7 million iPhones out the door. This is the overall theme of the Apple earnings report, with Apple announcing a whopping $1.05 billion in profit. Since there is not last year comparison of iPhone sales, their is no growth estimate, but they are no doubt selling plenty of them.

The iPhone may be selling great, but there is quite a bit more exciting news for Apple than the iPhone. The amount of Macs sold is up 51%, and the amount of profit from them is 54%, over last year. This is of course in line with the exploding popularity of Macs lately. Apple is not longer a US only affair, as 44% of Apple’s revenue came from international sales.

iPod sales are still high, but seem to be pretty flat. No real growth there. 1% growth in sales, and 8% growth in revenue. Any growth is good though, so it is not like the iPod division is not performing well or anything. The iPod still carries 73% of the MP3 player market.

iPhone SDK beta 4 and iPhone firmware 2.0 5A258f released

Apple has made the 4th beta of it’s iPhone SDK (Software Developers Kit) available to iPhone developers. The new version of the iPhone SDK has support for OpenGL ES for the iPhone emulator that is included in the SDK. Before the support for this came out, to truly and reliably test iPhone applications, the developers would have to load the application onto the iPhone.

You can download the new SDK by visiting the iPhone Developer Center. The new SDK weighs in at 1.15GB, so if you have a slow connection, you should probably get that download started so you can begin playing with the new SDK by morning.

“The fourth beta version of the iPhone SDK includes Xcode IDE, iPhone simulator with Open GL ES support, Interface Builder, Instruments, frameworks and samples, compilers, and Shark analysis” tool.

From the iPhone SDK change log

Apple also took the opportunity to drop a new firmware build 5A258f. It is of course only available to select developers. It is not known if the Pwnage Tool, in it’s current form, will work. It could take a little while for the Pwnage Tool to catch up with the new firmware. The firmware file is 200MB, much more bandwidth friendly than the SDK.

Please check back soon for hands-on review of iPhone firmware 2.0 5A258f.

NSFW: iPhone Stars In Music Video “Smell Yo D*ck”

With the iPhone popping up in every other form of mass media available, it was only a matter of time until it made it's way into a starring role in a mainstream music video, but somehow I don't think this is what Steve had in mind. Don't get me wrong, having the iPhone in a music video is a great and all, but did it really have to be called "Smell Your D*ck"?

SDK Beta 4 Released, Adds OpenGL ES Support, Code Signing Enforced

A new version of the iPhone SDK beta, version 4, was released earlier today. New features in the update include OpenGL ES support and the enforcement of a new code signing policy:

OpenGL ES support: The iPhone emulator will now be able to render OpenGL ES in applications, matching the capabilities of the iPhone 2.0 software.
Code signing enforced: iPhone applications will now need to contain a valid certificate (obtained from the restricted, $99, iPhone Developer program) in order to be loaded on actual devices. If a developer does not have a certificate, apps will still run in the simulator but not physical devices.

Apple Q2 2008: 10.644m iPods, 1.7m iPhones sold

Reporting its second quarter financial results today, Apple said it sold 10.6 million iPods during the quarter—on par with most analyst predictions, and pushing the total number of iPods sold to just over 152 million.

Despite Apple’s dramatic iPod shuffle price drop during the quarter, which saw the iPod family for the first time become accessible at the $49 price point, iPod sales were almost flat compared to the year-ago quarter, with only 1% growth in unit sales, and 8% growth in revenues. It also sold 1.7 million iPhones in the quarter, bringing the total number of units sold up to 5.4 million as of March 31, a number that is likely over 6 million by now.

The company posted revenue of $7.51 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.05 billion, or $1.16 per diluted share, compared with revenue of $5.26 billion and net quarterly profit of $770 million, or $.87 per diluted share in Q2 2007. Sales of Other Music Related Products + Services were up 35% over the year-ago quarter and 9% over the first quarter of 2008, to $881 million total. That category includes iTunes Store sales, iPod services, and revenues from Apple and third-party iPod accessories. Total iPhone revenue, including carrier agreements and all iPhone accessories from Apple and third parties, was $412m, up 57% over the preceding quarter despite a 26% drop in unit sales.

“We’re delighted to report 43 percent revenue growth and the strongest March quarter revenue and earnings in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over $17 billion in revenue for the first half of our fiscal year, we have strong momentum to launch some terrific new products in the coming quarters.”

“We’re thrilled to have generated $4 billion in cash flow from operations in the first half of fiscal 2008, yielding an ending cash balance of $19.4 billion,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the third quarter of fiscal 2008, we expect revenue of about $7.2 billion and earnings per diluted share of about $1.00.”
