Britain’s iPhone Fix: This Friday
Expected for release on Friday, Apple is bringing it’s iPhone into British territory.
Carphone, and O2 are the only store brands that are allowed to sell the device, even going so far as to keep all 783 of their stores open during the night so buyers can get their fix.
The UK’s new iPhone will be branded at £269 (also considered the most expensive handset on the market), but the price spikes up to £899 due to the 1.5 year contract. Analysts are saying these price ranges are the ‘unusual’ for the UK market, which usually provides cheaper alternatives.

Carolina Milanesi, business-analyst Gartner’s research director, said that “It’s definitely a new approach because the phone is not subsidised,” and went on to say “Consumers are buying it for the user interface; it’s essentially the latest and greatest iPod that also happens to be a phone. In the UK we’re very spoilt because we normally get a phone cheaply if we sign up to a contract but that doesn’t happen in countries like Italy, Belgium and Finland.” Gartner also predicts that the iPhone’s sales could go up into the hundreds of thousands within the next two months.
Not surprisingly, the UK is a little unhappy that the iPhone is bound in contract to AT&T, and not open to others. This leads to unlocking via hacks and 3rd party apps, or less sales in general. Don’t forget that the new iPhone being released friday will come with Firmware v1.1.2 as well, making this a non-issue for a little longer.
