The iPhone hacking community has already brought us as a range of musical applications to the iPhone. First it was PocketGuitar - a touchscreen guitar, then iAno - a touchscreen piano and finally folks at MooCowMusic had released Drummer which turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a drum pad. They have recently released a native iPhone application called Band which as the name suggests brings all of these musical applications together into a single app along with a lot of interesting features.

While this technically isn't directly about the iPhone, we thought that some of you might find this to be interesting, especially with all the speculation flying around of an Apple-made multitouch Mac tablet of some kind. Microsoft released their answer to the iPhone with their multi-touch computer, Surface. Now, Christian Moore has created a similar framework for the Mac.

Apple sues Atico International over iPod accessories

In a case that outlines the legal strategy that will be used against companies that create iPod accessories without joining Apple’s Made for iPod program, the company has filed suit against Atico International over a series of patent and trademark infringements relating to the latter’s iPod accessories.

Apple is claiming infringement of a patent on remote controls, infringement on the design patents for its Universal Dock well, as well as three Dock Adapters, and trademark violations relating to the Made for iPod, iPod mark, and iPod image trademarks.

Apple has also alleged that Atico is unfairly competing with Apple in violation of federal law based on its use of Apple’s trademarks, falsely suggesting that its products are associated with Apple.

Some of Atico’s products are being sold at Walgreens under the Living Solutions brand; offerings include an AM/FM Alarm Clock Radio with iPod Dock, a Portable Boom Box with iPod Dock, and the JBL On Stage-styled Portable Speaker with iPod Dock.

iPhone Grey Market Spreading Globally

There has been rumor after rumor about this or that country finally getting the iPhone, but don't think that the lack of an official presence is standing in the way of international consumers. The iPhone grey market is alive and well, and spreading the iPhone around the globe faster than Apple can get it launched, according to AdMob Mobile Metrics, a recent survey from AdMob.

Apple Awarded Black Pencil For iPhone, iMac

The announcement makes for a total of six of the awards since 1999, making Apple the most successful firm in the 45-year history of the awards.

Google-Made Native iPhone Apps Ready For Store Launch

Google is joining the ranks as one software developer that's highly anticipating the opening of Apple's iPhone/iPod touch App Store. Features provided by Google have been available on the iPhone since the beginning with the Google Maps app, followed by Youtube. Great as those are, don't think they're stopping there. Along with the numerous web apps they have planned, the web giant has several native apps patiently waiting. Said Vic Gundotra, Google VP of engineering, "we expect to have applications at Day One."

I've got a story over at the Mothership about Google's iPhone plans, in which Vic Gundotra, the company's vice president of engineering, talks about Google's commitment to producing native apps for the iPhone. (It's part of a larger profile of Google's Mac development efforts that I wrote, just in case that sort of thing interests you.)

Anyway, there's an anecdote Gundotra related to me that I couldn't fit into the article but that I think is amusing enough to repeat here.

He told me that he and his family were having lunch a few weeks back with another family -- adults clustered at one end of the table, kids at the other. And at one point in the conversation, Gundotra's friend asks a question that Gundotra doesn't know the answer to. He says, "I don't know," which is when his four-year-old -- previously indifferent to the adults' conversation -- chimes in: "Daddy," she asks, "where's your phone?"

"What happened was, she heard me tell my friend 'I don't know,'" Gundotra told me. "And when she hears me say, 'I don't know,' she expects me to pick up my iPhone and get an answer. That's the world a four-year-old is growing up in."

I've had similar experiences with other technology. For example, sometimes when I'm in a movie theater and I miss a portion of the dialogue, I'll instinctively make a motion with my hand like I'm pressing the Rewind button on a TiVo remote -- I'll even mimic the little be-boop noise the TiVo makes when it rewinds, if I'm being especially mindless. And I always feel just a trifle disappointed when the movie doesn't rewind on my command.

Ecamm Releases Updated iPhone Drive & Data Interface

Yesterday Ecamm Network released version 2.0 of their iPhone interface software, now called PhoneView. Previously called MegaPhone, PhoneView allows iPhone users full access to the media portion of the phone. PhoneView doesn't require any hacks and immediately allows access to your music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, camera roll, and photo albums. Additionally, PhoneView also provides access to notes, contacts, recents, SMS message history, and much more.

Boston Apple Store Opens With Red Sox

Crowds stormed the grand opening of Bostons new Apple Store to a thundering applause and Red Sox players.

Christine McConville for the Boston Herald writes, "It was a great night to be an Apple fan."

"Seconds after a cheering mob of Apple employees threw open the glass doors at the nation’s largest Apple Store, awestruck fans ran inside to thundering applause."

"As they spiraled up a glass staircase, the rock star treatment continued. There was Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek chatting nonchalantly with a couple of Apple guys.And on the next level, Sox players Manny Delcarmen and Coco Crisp [stats] drew as many stares as Apple’s lightest-ever laptop computers."

Canadian iPhone to Qualify for $7 Data Plan?

The Canadian iPhone is to be launched in June and may have the least expensive data plan of any carrier so far, according to an Electronista report.

It is likely that the Canadian iPhone will be distributed next month at the same time as the 3G iPhone is launched internationally.

"The sources claim that the iPhone will qualify for Rogers' $7 on-device browsing plan, which currently allows all phones offered by Rogers (excepting BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices) to access the web as much as they like through the carrier's officially-sanctioned browser," Electronista reports.

It is unknown whether Rogers will attempt to control the type of traffic that is included in this plan.

Google Ready With Native iPhone Apps

Google is reporting that it will have iPhone applications ready for the day the 2.0 firmware ships. "We expect to have applications at Day One," said Vic Gundotra, Google's vice president of engineering.

In a MacWorld report Gundotra reveals that Google is building native programs for the iPhone with the software development kit announced by Apple in March. While not divulging the specifics of what Google is planning, Gundotra says the company is eager to take advantage of access to the native device. It also plans to continue offering Web-based apps, which offer the advantage of continuous updates and improvements. "It's the best of both worlds," Gundotra said.

The company will likely create native versions of key web applications, such as Calendar and Docs.

Free iPhone WiFi at AT&T hot spots

The free WiFi at AT&T hotspots for the iPhone has been an interesting and on going saga. It has been confusing, with AT&T allowing free WiFi access, then just as fast, taking it away. Either way, it is back now, and more than that, it is official. Hopefully this time it is here to stay.

It seems that now, the access to the WiFi is included with iPhone plans. That is about as official as it can get and it is most likely you will not see AT&T disable it again. It is still not known if AT&T will deploy extra security measures, as anyone with a little know how can get free WiFi on there laptop using this offering.

The service is available at all of the 17,000 AT&T hot spots in the U.S. To use the service, all you have to do is connect to the hot spot using your iPhone. You will be presented with a screen that will ask you for your phone number. The number must be linked to a valid AT&T account, that has an iPhone active on it. This means that people with a jailbroken iPhone can not use the service. That is unless of course they have a buddy with an iPhone on AT&T.

MegaPhone now PhoneView: an app by any other name would smell as sweet

Look: we don’t care much what it’s called; what we do care about is the fact that it lets us do things with our iPhone and our Mac that would be otherwise impossible.

Aside from a brand new name, the latest version of Ecamm’s iPhone utility has a few new tricks up its sleeves: you can now add and edit notes without having to reboot the phone after each individual change (nice!), you can search most data with an iTunes-style search box, and there’s full access to the iPhone’s contact list. They’ve also fixed a number of minor bugs and tweaked minor features, so now your exported photos will have the correct creation date, and file and folder modification dates will now be preserved.

Orange to grow iPhones in Europe, Middle East, and Africa

More fun with carriers! Orange, who already has an exclusive deal with Apple for providing the iPhone in France, has now announced that it’s made a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to other countries under their dominion.

As of “later this year” (which we are awarding “most favored catchphrase” status), Orange will be providing the iPhone in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, and “Orange’s African markets.” While they didn’t spell out which countries that includes, Orange currently has operations in Guinea Konakri, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Niger, Ivory Coast, Mali, Kenya, Cameroon, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Botswana, Reunion, and Mauritius.

For those playing along at home, you’ll notice some duplicates there: Swisscom has already announced a deal in Switzerland, América Móvil has claimed the Dominican Republic, and Vodafone has spoken for Egypt and Portugal. Most interestingly, T-Mobile has been offering the iPhone in Austria since February, which means they didn’t manage to snag an exclusive agreement for the country.

The country parade seems like it’s continuing unabated. Let’s see what next week brings, shall we?

Orange bringing iPhone Europe, Africa, and the Middle East

Orange has just pumped out a press release today detailing its plans to carry the iPhone. They will be providing the iPhone in such countries as the Dominican Republic, Austria, and Switzerland. They are also bringing the device to several African markets. The press release is brief, and lists only the countries that Orange will provide the iPhone in.

Orange today announced a new agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Orange customers in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets later this year. -From Press Release

It seems to be the common consensus across the internet that they are talking about the 3G iPhone. Many of these markets already have iPhones being sold in them, so it is very likely that yes that is what they are talking about. The press release does not say explicitly 3G iPhone, new iPhone, or any other alias we know it by.

Orange to Offer iPhone in 12 Countries in 2008

Early Friday, France-Telecom owned wireless carrier Orange confirmed that it will be offering Apple's iPhone in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets in 2008.

The move adds to Orange's portfolio, which includes the French market.

Orange is the key brand of France Telecom, one of the world's leading telecommunications operators. France Telecom serves more than 172 million customers in five continents as of March 31, 2008, of which two thirds are Orange customers.

Orange’s African markets include: Egypt, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Cameroon, Botswana, Madagascar, Mali, Senegal, Mauritius, and Réunion.

Swisscom has already announced plans to offer the iPhone in Switzerland, Vodafone will carrying it in Portugal and Egypt and America Movil has already called the Dominican Republic. Clearly Apple is moving away from their one carrier per market model.

John Mayer Found Toting BlackBerry Bold as Opposed to iPhone

Singer John Mayer, who's been closely tied in with Apple for years (and hauled out after numerous Macworld Expo keynotes to play in a style not entirely unlike the Johnny Fontaine character from the first "Godfather" movie) was sighted with a Blackberry Bold unit. This comes after Mayer received a MacBook Air earlier than it was made available to the consumer market.

New Apple MacBook Due in 3Q 2008?

Flat-panel makers have obtained orders for Apples new MacBook to be launched in the third quarter of 2008 according to a MarketWatch Report.

AU Optronics Corp. and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp., Taiwan's top two flat-panel makers by revenue, have obtained flat-panel orders for Apple Inc.'s new MacBook, the Commercial Times reported Friday, citing industry sources.

According to the Chinese daily, the shipment target for the MacBook is in the third quarter of this year. The flat-panel order is up to three million units and could be worth nearly NT$13.5 billion. The orders will be evenly split between the two companies.

It is suggested that new MacBook would see a move to the Montevina platform and possibly even a transition from plastic to aluminum and stainless steel.

Multi-Touch Music Mixing Software for Mac

This week algoriddim released the new version of its successful turntable-style digital audio player. djay 2.1 is the first DJing application to feature scratching and mixing using the trackpad built into Mac notebooks. With multi-finger trackpad gestures, users can scratch songs, apply effects, and crossfade just as you would on a real turntable and mixer.

The two-finger gestures are supported on all Mac notebooks featuring two-finger scrolling, making the feature available to most users with iBook, PowerBook, MacBook or MacBook Pro computers. Users of the MacBook Air and the latest MacBook Pro can use additional three-finger gestures to backspin the record or perform djay’s built-in song transitions.

The iPhone in new countries

Orange has just announced that they will provide the iPhone is new countries such as: Austria, Belgium, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland. Vodafone has announced back on the 6th of May that they will deliver the iPhone in those countries: South Africa, Australia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, New Zealand, Portugal, Turkey and Czech Republic.

Apparently we’re going to see some competition in several countries around the iPhone, let’s see if it makes the price going down…

Review: TapeDeck 1.0

If you grew up in the pre-digital age, you might fondly remember the tactile qualities of what would now be summarily dismissed as ‘retro’ recording kit. There’s a definite immediacy to a tape deck: big buttons, with large text that leaves you in no doubt regarding function, and this is something that cannot be said for the bulk of audio-recording software. TapeDeck now aims to bridge old and new.

Boot the app and a digital tape deck appears on the screen. The buttons all work as you’d expect, even making suitably chunky noises when clicked. However, SuperMegaUltraGroovy has made plenty of concessions to the modern age: mono, stereo and quality levels can be selected with mouse clicks; tapes can be labelled and relabelled with ease; and keyboard shortcuts provide an alternate means of controlling the virtual tape deck (with system-wide shortcuts also available for ‘Record’, ‘Pause’ and ‘Stop’).

In keeping with the application’s aesthetic, each chunk of recorded audio is displayed in a slide-out drawer as a cassette tape. (In reality, this is merely a pretty way of displaying the contents of the M4A files TapeDeck stores in ~/Music/TapeDeck, and so users can also manage TapeDeck recordings in Finder.) Tapes can’t be recorded over, although they can be dropped in the Trash via Command-drag (Command-dragging elsewhere copies the tape to a Finder folder).

Other handy features become evident with a little exploration. Control-click on the current tape and the contextual menu provides shortcuts for adding the tape to iTunes or emailing it. And when the drawer becomes full, you can drag tapes around until you find what you want, or use the built-in search field to hone down the displayed tapes.

Strictly speaking, TapeDeck offers nothing new in terms of functionality—the likes of GarageBand and a slew of other recording apps do everything TapeDeck can and more. Also, importing is strictly limited to M4A, which is a shame—it would be great if you could drop MP3s and audio files saved with lossless formats into TapeDeck.

However, as iPhone continues to bludgeon into people’s minds, the interface is often key, and where TapeDeck excels is in making the audio-recording process totally idiot-proof and fun. It’s not quite enough for TapeDeck to garner a Cult of Mac recommendation badge, but it comes close, and if you’re flush and fancy dropping 25 bucks on a fun, straightforward and surprisingly original take on audio recording, TapeDeck more than fits the bill.

Native iPhone App - iSlsk brings P2P file sharing to the iPhone

iPhone developer Errrick has just released a native P2P file sharing client called iSlsk for jailbroken iPhones that works with the Soulseek network. It appears to be the first useful native peer-to-peer application developed for the iPhone so far.
