‘Enable 3G’ Preference Not Fake

Ok, you'll want to sit down for this because it's a little bit ridiculous. So there has been some talk flying around the web about that 3G preferences screenshot. The people who posted the information on the site that was tipped to MacRumors recently posted a disclaimer saying that the screenshot was a photoshop mockup constructed from the current firmware showing what it probably looks like, and that they absolutely did not leak an actual screenshot from firmware 2.0. They also note that anything they said was said previous to being accepted to the iPhone Developer Program.

Yes, we know. You're tired of 3G iPhone launch date rumors. We are too, but InfoSync thinks they really have it. They claim to have information from an (allegedly reliable) anonymous source stating that the 3G iPhone will be launched at WWDC on June 9th, as suspected. However, their source also stated that the device would not go on sale immediately, but would instead go on sale "about a week and a half later", somewhere around June 18th or 19th.

Increasingly, people work online, using web-based applications for day-to-day tasks. Unfortunately, web browsers aren’t the most robust of applications—a single unruly website or advert is enough to lock up Firefox or bring down Safari unexpectedly. At best, you’ll waste time reopening a browser and signing back in; at worst, you’ll lose work and a precious little nugget of sanity.

Inspired by Prism by Mozilla Labs, Fluid offers an approach referred to as Site-Specific Browsers (SSBs). As the method’s name suggests, this enables you to create browsers for specific sites, making them akin to desktop applications. This is great from a stability standpoint—there aren’t other windows with content that can cause problems—but it’s also handy in making you focus on the tasks at hand, rather than getting tempted to check out other websites.

Creating SSBs using Fluid is child’s play—you bung a URL, name, location and icon (if you don’t have one to hand, an application icon is created based on the site’s favicon) into Fluid’s sole dialog, hit ‘Create’ and wait a few seconds. Fluid then invites you to launch your new SSB, which is basically a honed-down Safari with your site preloaded, restricted to site-specific content (click on an ‘external’ link and it launches in your default browser). Usefully, some SSBs (such as those based on online email) provide Dock badge updates, just like Mail, and each SSB can be restyled (UI, opacity, fonts) and set to various window levels. Not so usefully, Fluid doesn’t work particularly well with some sites (during our tests, Flickr was a notable culprit) until you tinker with the SSB’s advanced preferences and add some extra URLs that it’s allowed to peruse.

Interestingly, Fluid’s creator appears keen to take his application further. Recent builds have seen Fluid become a reasonable browser for general use, and while the ability to browse via Cover Flow won’t win it many friends, forthcoming tabbed browsing improvements and menu-extra SSBs mean Fluid has the potential to gain a strong foothold in the Mac browser market, rather than remaining a purely niche concern.

We can’t imagine parting with our iPhone just yet—not until the mythical 3G version comes out, anyway—but it seems that some of the refurbished iPhones that Apple is selling are making their way out to the public with a little extra something: data from their previous owners. A detective from the Oregon State Police was able to extract data from a refurbished iPhone. It appears that though you can wipe your iPhone from inside iTunes, it doesn’t do quite the thorough job that you might want.

So, if you are planning getting rid of your iPhone, Rich Mogull of TidBITS (and a Macworld contributor) has a suggestion about how to thoroughly clean your data off the iPhone, using nothing more than iTunes. Rich’s method essentially relies on overwriting the existing data by repeatedly syncing media files to the iPhone. It may not be quite as complete as some of the low-level formatting options available to other disks, but it’s probably better than just using the default that iTunes offers.

AT&T Launches Free Wi-Fi For 3G Laptop Card Users

AT&T took a step in the wrong direction a while ago when they put the free Wi-Fi access for iPhone owners indefinitely on hold. Well, now it seems that they've turned around and given it to laptop owners instead. Starting yesterday, AT&T began offering free access to their several thousand Wi-Fi hotspots around the country to customers subscribed to their data service via 3G data card. The internal memo also hints at future inclusion of smartphones.

Would You Buy a Gold iPhone for $6,000?

Readers are always asking, justifiably so, who in their right minds would buy a gold or diamond-
studded gadget. (The operative phrase here is "right minds," of course.) But mine is not to question why.

What I do know, if this eBay auction is any indication, is that some people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for a 24k gold iPhone--presuming that the bids are authentic. The auction, tracked by Gizmodo, drew 69 bids and ended with a sale price of $6,000 last night.
The phone itself is unlocked and of the 16GB variety, apparently from an outfit appropriately dubbed iCandyPhones. The winner's handle wasn't disclosed, perhaps for fear of ridicule by his or her friends.

AT&T Reverses One-iPhone Policy

Just five days after instituting a policy of one iPhone sale per customer, AT&T said Thursday that it has ended the policy both on its Web site and in its retail stores. Customers will now be able to buy three iPhones per person, a limit that the carrier enacted when the device first went on sale almost a year ago.

The nation's largest carrier and exclusive provider of the iPhone imposed the new policy only Wednesday, limiting iPhones to not only one per customer, but also one per household. At the time, AT&T gave no reason for the limit, nor did it make an official announcement. An AT&T spokesperson declined to comment and even a customer service rep we spoke to over the phone was unaware of the one-iPhone limit.

According to Information Week, the carrier lifted the new limit after realizing it has "sufficient inventory" to revert to its original policy. What's more, though AT&T started selling refurbished iPhones earlier this week at a $150 discount, the refurbished models are no longer listed on AT&T's site.

It's a bizarre turn in the wait for the 3G iPhone, which is expected to launch during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference that starts June 9. Apple has not set an official release date for the device, but recent iPhone inventory shortages in the United Kingdom and the United States have fueled speculation that a launch is imminent. Also, Apple is no longer selling the current iPhone on its online store.

AT&T's got some refurbished iPhones for sale on their website; 16GB phones for $349.00 and 8GB phones for $249.00. If you want them, get 'em soon because they tend to sell out of these fast. We realize that a majority of our readers already have an iPhone, but we figure someone could use a deal before the 3G iPhone comes out. Yes they're first gen phones, but there's nothing wrong with them... well, not anymore (wink wink). If you're in the market for one, this is likely the only place you can find one outside of a lonely AT&T store in some small town.

AT&T: 3G Network to be Completed by June

On Wednesday, wireless carrier AT&T announced that it plans to have completed the deployment of its 3G wireless infrastructure by next month. The expected deadline arrives around when Apple is expected to begin selling a 3G iPhone capable of using the faster wireless network.

Rural carriers complain to FCC about iPhone exclusivity

Many potential iPhone customers in the US have been irked by Apple’s exclusive deal with AT&T, but that marriage is now coming under pressure from another source: small, rural cellphone providers. At issue is the the fact that AT&T does not offer the iPhone for sale in many rural areas where they only offer roaming service.

And, since the exclusive deal prohibits the local cell providers from selling the iPhone, that means that inhabitants of those areas—like much of Vermont, and rural areas in 15 other states—will not be recipients of the iPhone love.

So it is that the Rural Cellular Association, a trade group of 80 small rural providers, plans to petition the FCC to look into the legality of exclusive deals such as the one between AT&T and Apple. According to the Wall Street Journal, most of these small carriers serve 500,000 people or fewer, though those numbers do add up. Ars Technica highlights the case in Alaska, where residents had trouble legally using the iPhone, due to service restrictions imposed by AT&T.

The FCC has apparently intervened on similar issues in the past, as Ars points out, such as forcing Direct Broadcast Satellite providers to offer their services in Alaska and Hawaii. Whether or not that precedent will cover the RCA’s request remains to be seen.

Apple Posts New iPod + iTunes Ad

Apple has begun airing a new iPod + iTunes TV Ad featuring the band Coldplay.

The new spot has rock band Coldplay playing the song “Viva La Vida” from their upcoming album. Apple has slightly increased the brightness of their usual silhouettes so you can see dimly lit band members in front of a dark background with brightly colored effects.

Analysts: Expect Few Major Changes With 3G iPhone

Analysts from Piper Jaffray are saying not to expect any radical changes to the next iPhone. The firm says that they believe the only major difference between the new device and the old one will be the 3G connectivity, and not to expect anything like GPS. They do note that other differences have not been entirely ruled out, but other changes will more likely be cosmetic, such as a new faceplate or increased thickness due to the larger 3G chipset.

According to Paul Carton, a research director at ChangeWave, 1 out of every 4 people in the united states who want an iPhone are waiting to purchase one until Apple makes an announcement about the next generation of the device. The ratio is based on information from a survey of 3,600 people taken in March, which showed that 14% of perspective iPhone buyers are waiting for a new version of the device, and 11% are waiting for a version with 3G compatibility.

Apple to Use LED Backlight Units in all MacBooks

According to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN), Apple plans to use LED backlight units (BLUs) in all of its MacBooks in 2009, which will benefit Taiwan-based BLU maker Kenmos Technology.

Kenmos was Apple's main suppler for LED BLUs in 2007, according to the paper. Market observers estimate that Kenmos Technology's shipments could reach 1.5 million units this year, up five times compared to 2007, for a global market share of 9%, stated the paper. LED BLUs have already contributed more than NT$2 billion (US$66 million) to Kenmos' revenues this year, noted the EDN.

SmileOnMyMac has released TextExpander 2.2, an update to its customizable typing shortcut tool for Mac OS X. With TextExpander, users can define abbreviations for
frequently-used text strings and images, also known as snippets. When an abbreviation is typed, it expands automatically to the full snippet.

This update adds a predefined snippet group with common CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) code. It limits "Adapt to Case" to lowercase snippets and to abbreviations with two or more characters. A conflict with MacSpeech Dictate has also been resolved.
