Personal Information Recovered From Refurbished iPhone

Some disturbing information has come about that might make you think twice about handing in your old iPhone to Apple to be refurbished. An Oregon State police officer was able to recover email, photos, and other data from an "out-of-the-box refurbished iPhone" he had purchased. Jonathan Zdziarski was contacted by the officers who found the information.

3G iPhone launch confirmed for June 9th?

According to one source claiming to have been tipped by sources close to the 3G iPhone, the device will in fact be announced on June 9th at WWDC. Then, immediately after, the device is expected to be unleashed to the waiting masses. The launch will be a worldwide launch, as opposed to the original launch, where it started in the U.S. and made its way to other countries later.

According to the article it will not take long, as the device will be available in Spain as early as June 18th. The launch schedule is very interesting, starting with a single Apple Store, and a single Telefonica store. Then within 24 hours the device will make country wide launch. According to the article, this is the same launch scheme that will be used all across Europe.

According to this articles “reliable sources” the device will not be sold at fixed price points in Europe. This means basically carriers are free to sell the device at whatever price they feel. This means that if we are lucky, then the new iPhone will indeed carry a subsidy. This is especially necessary in Europe, where the carriers are ultra competitive with one another.

John Chen, CEO of the enterprise developing firm Sybase, has announced plans to release a native iPhone application that will let users securely access corporate email "soon". The CEO claims the software will be ready some time later this year. The app will give corporate email users the same security found on the Blackberry, the Treo, and Palm devices.

Gizmodo claims to have information from "sources close to the 3G iPhone launch" saying that the 3G iPhone will indeed be announced at WWDC next month, and will go on sale shortly after. The sources say that the device will be available worldwide right after the launch takes place, rather than waiting until the end of the year to launch internationally.

Apple looking at over the air downloads for 3G iPhone

Many 3G devices on many carriers can download music and such over the air, but for EDGE devices like the iPhone this is a little less practical. Now there are over the air downloads via the iTunes Store for the iPhone, but you must be in a WiFi hot spot to take advantage of the service. With the addition of 3G to the new iPhone though, over the air downloads will be much more feasible.

That’s because the addition of 3G will make the device exponentially faster when transferring data. Also, 3G will increase call quality. An article in the New York Time suggests that Apple is in talks with major record labels about the service. It seems all is not well in the negotiations though, as the labels are all wanting more than 70 cents per song.

According to the article Apple is planning a big launch in June. Apple also is looking to add more songs to its listing of ring tones. Apple is also looking to bring call tones to the iPhone, which may be worth even more than a traditional ring tone according to the report. It is assumed if a deal is struck it will be introduced at Apple’s WWDC event on June 9th.

Opera Mobile 9.5 To Be Better Than Safari On iPhone?

In comparison to most other smartphones, the iPhone has one of (if not the) best web browsers out there for a mobile device, but Matthew Miller from ZDNet thinks that a different one may have it beat as the best of the mobile browsers. He got a chance to try out the Opera Mobile 9.5 web browser while using an HTC Advantage, and he believes that it's the best mobile browser out there. He posted a video demoing the software.

Brigtonnet BI-IPEN works as a stylus for iPhone

If you have ever looked down at that sleek iPhone or iPod Touch in your pocket and thought “wow, this thing needs a stylus”, then Brightonnet’s new BI-IPEN might just be for you. As capacitive touch devices, the iPhone and iPod Touch can not use a stylus. They need to feel the small electric charge from your fingertip, which plastic or metal can not traditionally provide.

The BI-IPEN is solving that using a special type of conductive resin on the bottom of the pen. The device will allow you to touch and drag, but unless you are going to set the device down and use two of these bad boys, then no multi touch. It is available in both black and silver, but I could not find a price for the device, or if it is even shipping yet.

It's been a while since we've reviewed anything here at iPA, but we're ready to get back into the groove and start reviewing all the stuff that's piled up. Starting off, we've got the Showcase by Contour. The Showcase is a hard plastic case with a few tricks up its sleeve. A removable belt clip gives it a versatile edge and the two halves stay together using a hinge instead of clipping the halves together all the way around. Not only is it useful, it's also quite stylish.

iPhones sold as refurbished unit reveals previous owners personal data

iDial Provides Hi-Tech Rotary Dialing

Here's another interesting but not-so-useful app. (Actually, it looks a bit like Steve Jobs's joke at the 2007 Macworld keynote.) This app is called iDial, and it introduces a certain lo-tech element back into the iPhone. Forget virtual touchscreen buttons for dialing your numbers. iDial gives you a virtual touchscreen rotary dial! Sure, it's really time consuming and a step back in the ease-of-use that Apple worked so hard to provide, but it makes up for that (at least somewhat) in coolness. Video after the break.

iPhone Dev Camp 2 Announced

From the people who do BarCamp and who brought us the first iPhoneDevCamp in July 2007 comes iPhoneDevCamp 2, a not-for-profit conference for developing applications for the iPhone/iPod touch platform under native SDK and web standards. The venue is being hosted yet again by Adobe Systems in San Francisco, CA. Attending the gathering will be Cocoa Touch developers, web developers, UI designers, and software testers, which can all work together and collaborate during the event.

DVDRemaster Pro 4.4 Now Available

On Monday, software company Metakine released DVDRemaster Pro 4.4, a Mac OS X utility which allows DVDs to be compressed and saved to a hard drive. Once imported, content can then be converted to iPod nano, iPod classic, iPod touch, iPhone, Apple TV and other formats.

iPhone leaves AT&T sitting pretty

The iPhone Central Depart of Statistical Analysis and Strategic Systems (yes, we do have SASS) brings you some more fascinating numbers, courtesy of Rubicon Consulting (the same firm that told us last month that iPhone users are young, rich, and technologically savvy). It seems that getting in the iPhone game has, rather unsurprisingly, been pretty sweet for AT&T.

Out of the 460 iPhone users that Rubicon surveyed, nearly half (47%) switched from other carriers just to use the iPhone. And in average, going to the iPhone meant a $19 price hike over their current bills.

As a switcher myself (and, let me tell you, haven’t really found myself missing my old friend Verizon), that sounds right on to me. In particular, that $19 figure is conveniently about the cost of the iPhone’s additional $20/month unlimited data package. Makes sense to me and that makes dollars and cents for AT&T.

XSKN is case for 3G iPhone?

Well we may have just found the first 3G iPhone case. According to the manufacturer, this case if for the 3G iPhone, and there is also one for the normal iPhone. The case seems to be called ELECTRAonBLACK, which no doubt refers to the wild colors of the case. It could be a manufacturer looking for attention, but then again, it could be legitimate.

As you can see, the case clearly fits the rumored specifications. The design of the case fits the curved back rumor, it also fits the description of the bottom of the device. The device in the case is very clearly a stock photo of the current iPhone. That would be expected considering the device is not even out to the public yet.

It is not clear when the case will be made available. Logic would suggest as soon as the 3G iPhone comes out, but you never know. Since the device in the photo is the original iPhone, we do not get to know anything new about the 3G iPhone.

Google to provide applications from day one of firmware 2.0 launch

Google has always been a major player when it comes to the iPhone. The iPhone came loaded with YouTube, Google Maps, and a extremely simple method to sync up your Gmail account with your iPhone. Upon launch, many of Google’s web applications were ported over for use with the iPhone’s mobile Safari browser.

According to the Vice President of Google’s Engineering department, Google will be providing applications for the iPhone from day one of the release of iPhone firmware 2.0, and will make them available in the App Store. Most already assumed this would be the case. Google says that the iPhone has changed the way people will look at mobile web browsing.

That’s because according to Google, all mobile browsers are different. There are so many platforms, and so few use the same mobile browser. Google thinks that with how successful WebKit based browsers like mobile Safari, and the browser found on some Nokia devices, most manufacturers will adopt a WebKit based solution in the future as well. Google made it known that despite bringing native applications to the iPhone, they will still maintain and develop web based applications, as they do know.

Orange bring iPhone to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East

Orange has just pumped out a press release today detailing its plans to distribute the iPhone. They will be providing the iPhone in such countries as the Dominican Republic, Austria, and Switzerland. They are also bringing the device to several African markets. The press release is brief, and lists only the countries that Orange will provide the iPhone in.

Orange today announced a new agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Orange customers in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets later this year. -From Press Release

iPhone Buzz week in review

Well another week of iPhone news has gone by. This week has been somewhat slow compared to what we usually see. Quit possibly because everyone is counting down the days to WWDC. That’s because we are hearing rumors that the 3G iPhone will not be the only thing Apple is going to awe us with at the event.

Of course, this is referring to the mystery device that is rumored to drop at WWDC. We heard rumors about the device, and then even a confirmation by Intel’s German unit, saying that the device will be powered by their new Atom processor. These comments were of course retracted, and dismissed by Intel as a example of a device that could be powered by Atom.

The iPhone will see some new distribution in a few more countries according to Orange. The new countries include Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets. It is expected that the new markets will get the device by years’ end.

WWDC is going to be the place to be this year. Unfortunately though, unless you have already been accepted, you are not going to get in. The event is now fully booked. 3G iPhone rumors are slowly pouring in still. We have heard rumors that the 3G iPhone may come in up to three different color choices. This is not all, as we are also hearing rumors that the device will come with GPS, Mobile TV, and even video conferencing. This would be an amazing addition to the 3G iPhone, and with all that 3G action, will be welcomed with open arms.

An option for ‘iPhone Black’ showed up on AT&T’s website as an option for choosing your device. The option was found next to the normal iPhone option, which sparked a wave of rumors about the 3G iPhone launching soon. AT&T of course denied the rumors almost immediately, giving this response.

“The reference to “iPhone Black” was simply a temporary placeholder used over the weekend for a scheduled catalog update. It was meant to temporarily distinguish the various iPhone models-4GB, 8GB and 16GB-but was never reassigned. It should be corrected on the site by now.” Brad Mays, PR for AT&T.
