iTunes rumored to get $3.99 movie rentals

All signs are pointing to an announcement of iTunes movie rentals at Tuesday’s Macworld Expo; that’s the conclusion drawn after a Bloomberg report quoted “people familiar” with Apple’s upcoming addition to the media download service.  Newcomers Warner Bros. and Fox will join existing studio partners Paramount, Walt Disney Co. and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. in making their films available for temporary download, priced at $3.99 for 24hrs.

Goldman: 12-inch ultraportable MacBook ‘weeks away’

Apple may not comment on rumors and speculation, but even they would likely agree that Jim Goldman may have just scuppered at least part of their holiday season profits.  The CNBC writer quotes “a very good source of mine with good connections to Apple’s Asian manufacturing partners” in suggesting that the Cupertino-based company will be releasing the new 3G iPhone by May or June, as well as that we’re weeks away from the Macworld announcement of a $1,500 ultraportable MacBook laptop with 12-inch screen, flash memory rather than a hard drive and 50% thinner and lighter than existing models.

As Goldman notes, speculation about an SSD-based ultraportable has long been churned over online, but based on previous hardware reports and earlier information, the screen had been suggested as 13.1-inches rather than the 12 he claims.

Analyst predicts Apple & Nokia patent disputes

A London-based analyst is predicting tension between the Apple and Nokia camps come 2008, as the Finnish company develops the latest, touchscreen-focused upgrade to its S60 cellphone OS.  Already seen in promotional films, the Nokia Touch appears to use a capacitative touch-sensitive panel called Haptikos that adds haptic feedback to an OS that appears - in pre-release videos at least - to borrow heavily from the iPhone’s interface.  Richard Windsor, an analyst at Nomura, believes that “Apple will likely view Nokia as infringing on its user interface patents” and seek to delay development and production of the next-gen Nokia handsets.

O2 iPhone called ‘worst contract deal on market’

Fashion-conscious Apple-addicts may be busy squealing over their new iPhones in the UK, but The Times is naming and shaming Apple and O2 for selling “the worst contract on the market it terms of value for money”.  The contract - which lasts a minimum of 18 months and costs at least £35 ($72) a month - includes a mere 200 free text messages and 200 minutes of free calls, comparing badly to O2’s standard package which offers the same for £10 less.

“This is a very poor-value product and only makes sense if you are willing to sacrifice value for the new handset” Rob Barnes, Moneysupermarket.com

Chinese market estimated to net Apple $1.8bn a year

Apple could score big from Chinese iPhoneWe already know that China Mobile’s Wang Jianzhou is looking to play hardball with Apple over revenue sharing of the iPhone (Wang is of the opinion that since China Mobile is supplying all the users, Apple shouldn’t get a slice of his monthly income) but even without their regular tithe is it still worth Steve Jobs pushing the handset to the Chinese market?  Henry Blodget certainly thinks so; he’s run through some figures and, if you’re an Apple shareholder, the prospects look damned good:

“China’s mobile market is so huge that even if Apple gets only a tiny slice of it, even if China’s wireless operators stiff Apple on the subscription-revenue share, and even if Apple has to cut the iPhone’s price, we’re still talking big dollars” Henry Blodget
