iPhone & Android can co-exist, analysts reassure

Ever since the concept of a Google Phone or gPhone was suggested, pundits and analysts alike have theorised about the battle between it and the iPhone.  Since Google’s announcement of Android and the Open Handset Alliance, the side-taking has reached even headier heights; although there have been a few voices of relative reason - ARM’s Warren East, for instance - the temptation of a headline grabbing story featuring two emotive companies has lured in many.  Thankfully, as theorised for a while now over at Google-Phone, more people are waking up to the idea that actually, Apple really isn’t Android’s main target; in fact, they may have a common (though undiscussed) goal of disrupting the market status-quo.

Upcoming MacBook ultraportable to have Solid-State Drive?

As far as I’m aware, our boy Vincent has never been described as psychic but with his trials of a 64GB Samsung SSD NAND drive in a MacBook Pro over at SlashGear it could be that he’s pre-empted Apple’s latest laptop move.  AppleInsider quote analyst Gene Munster who has highlighted the solid-state drive as a likely candidate for inclusion in a new addition to the MacBook range, possibly in the form of the subnotebook many have long suspected Cupertino of working on.

“We believe NAND Flash drive sizes have now reached capacities that Apple would consider large enough to include in a new MacBook model.  As a result, a new, smaller version of Apple’s MacBook, and possibly an entirely new product, is more likely to be launched at MacWorld in early January” Gene Munster, Analyst

Apple dismiss feature criticism

Is the iPhone the 10-percent of features other, less Jesus-like handsets are used for, distilled into one Ives-designed body?  That’s what Apple appear to think, with a spokesperson dismissing criticism that the cellphone is missing some of the more mundane functionality users take for granted will be present in rival mobiles.

“We didn’t want to include something for something’s sake … For the average mobile phone most people only use around 10%, Apple didn’t want that to happen with the iPhone” Apple spokesperson

iPhone cause for smartphone price hike

Now its all just speculation right now, but its sounding more and more like the iPhone could cause other smartphones’ prices to go up. How? The more they try and be like the iPhone to more expensive the components become, namely the flash memory and multi-touch screen technology.

iPhone

Flash memory is probably the most expensive part that other companies are looking to adopt, namely because there is such a shortage of the stuff. Another big issue that is trying to be replicated is the amazing visual appearance and ease of use of the iPhone due to some powerful graphics chips, which other handsets don’t have.
