Latest firmware for iPhone allows image saving from Safari

When I came across this I could not help but be excited. How often are you browsing on your iPhone and you see an image you would really like to save for later? For most, that happens often. Apple has realized the desire for this feature, and in the latest release of the 1.2.0 firmware, this ability was discovered.

iPhone buzz save

The new firmware not only adds this feature, but makes it almost too easy to use. All you have to do is hold your finger on the image for a few seconds, and the shown dialog will appear giving you the choice to save the image, or to to go to the image URL. The image will be saved in an album on the iPhone so you can sync up later and retrieve it.

There are tons of things this could be useful for. Saving new images to set as backgrounds. Maybe saving a picture of of MySpace, the possibilities are endless. Again, this is directly from Safari, no iTunes, no third party application, it is all in Safari.

iPhone embedded YouTube in Mobile Safari confirmed

Playback of embedded videos in mobile Safari has been a long-demanded feature, and while Apple’s moves toward that as spotted in the latest firmware beta might be little more than a gesture - not full Flash compatibility, just avoiding having to leave Safari and view media in the standalone YouTube app - it’s a start at least.  iPhone Atlas have shown this screenshot of a handset running the new firmware, with a YouTube video waiting to be started:

As with the existing app, only YouTube content is supported and only if it’s been encoded in the H.264 format.  The hope now is that Apple - or third-party developers, though the terms of the SDK agreement currently don’t allow direct interaction with mobile Safari - will bring out a range of plugins that will enable more internet functionality.  Considering all the publicity Apple have courted recently over the popularity of the iPhone for getting online when mobile, it would seem a strange decision not to further enhance the experience.

iPhone SDK beta 3 suggests A2DP Bluetooth, GPS and ominous bricking reference

iPhone 2.0 Firmware betaThe recently released iPhone SDK Beta 3 continues to give up juicy hints as to Apple’s intents for the handset’s next major update; not only has the 3G chipset been identified but new code referring to stereo Bluetooth headset support, suggestions of GPS and new functionality for mobile Safari and Google Maps.  There are also signs that Apple may not be taking the ongoing hacking of the iPhone lying down, with the inclusion of a “BRICKED_AND_LOCKED_SIM_STRING” that suggests the handset could seize up should an unlocking attempt be made.

In terms of Bluetooth, A2DP has been included in the code as well as “HeadphonesBT” that indicates wireless stereo capabilities, long requested for the handset.  Bluetooth remote control is also mentioned.  The new beta also references “RoleGPS”, which many have assumed will mean either in-built navigation capabilities or at least compatibility with an external GPS device (likely connected via Bluetooth).

The library also includes a mention of “Printers”, a new addition, while reference to Nike+ sports monitoring equipment have been deleted.  The suspected integration of the currently standalone YouTube app into mobile Safari is also present, via a “YouTubePlugIn.webplugin” component, and “Google411″ - the search company’s directory enquiry service - is now associated with Google Maps on the iPhone.

Finally, there are suspicions that Apple will require official activation of an iPhone via iTunes before Firmware 2.0 is permitted to install.

Sun developing Java Virtual Machine for iPhone

sl-pm-ib-6.jpgI was under the impression that Apple said they wouldn’t allow code parser such as Sun’s JVM on the iPhone.

Sun came to the conclusion it could make a JVM work on the iPhone after taking 24 hours to look at information on Apple’s SDK. Sun saw nothing in the public statements preventing the JVM from being one of the applications enabled on the iPhone, said Klein. Apple released the SDK in conjunction with the beta release if its iPhone 2.0 software; the general release of iPhone 2.0 is scheduled for June.

Apple kill third-party background processes on iPhone

As developers eagerly download the iPhone SDK, is the gloss beginning to rub off? Robert Balousek spotted a potentially app-upsetting clause in the software’s documentation regarding third-party apps and background processes. It seems Apple is concerned that iPhone users might feel some of the molasses drag that Windows Mobile handsets experience when there are too many programs running in the background; rather than deal with that as creatively as they’ve managed the rest of the SDK, though, they’ve issued a blanket ban on any third-party software running when not the in-focus app. That means - no matter whether IM client, image editor or game - the program has to quit.

“Only one iPhone application can run at a time, and third-party applications never run in the background. This means that when users switch to another application, answer the phone, or check their email, the application they were using quits” Apple SDK documentation
