The iPhone is certainly making waves when it comes to the gaming industry. We’ve already seen one company form with the sole purpose of creating games for the phone. Now we have word that another big player in the industry is pondering the iPhone’s gaming potential.

Bioware is the studio behind awesome games like Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Co-CEO Greg Zeschuk recently stated that they’re looking into development for the iPhone. “Something that’s as big a cultural and technical success as the iPhone is something you’ve really got to take a close look at.”
This by no means is a definitive “yes, we’re going to develop for the iPhone,” but it certainly does look promising.

Is the iPhone going to be the next big mobile gaming platform? While I’m definitely excited about the possibilities, I find it tough as an avid gamer to think it will ever replace my DS, or someone else’s PSP. Neil Young, formerly of Electronic Arts (not to be confused with the legendary musician) believes so strongly in the iPhone’s gaming potential that he’s left one of the largest gaming companies to found his own company which will focus on games specifically for Apple’s phone.
Young describes the iPhone’s performance as being almost on-par with that of the PSP, but goes on to mention that “unlike the PSP, it’s got a touchscreen, accelerometers, a camera, it’s location-aware, it’s got all of your media on it, it’s awake with you, it’s always on, and it’s always connected to the network.” When he puts it like that, who wouldn’t want to develop games for it?
I’m still not sure that I’d give up my DS, but I’ll certainly be downloading games to my iPhone. You can bet that Ngcomo (Young’s new venture) won’t be the only one’s working hard to make the iPhone into the next big mobile gaming platform.

Gaming on the iPhone is going to be huge, game developers just can not keep their hands off of the iPhone, and for good reason. The device has a ton of horsepower, and has already proven it is more than capable of playing games, as well as perform all sorts of other functions. This is a very complex game, and is very telling of the iPhone’s abilities.

For those of you that have not heard of it, BioShock is a first person shooter that was released last year for the PC and on the Xbox 360. If systems like that are required to play this thing, than the iPhone must have some serious untapped potential. The game has not been ported to any mobile at all, and it will be interesting to see how it interacts with the touch screen.
The iPhone will be receiving the real deal. It will get a full 3D, high resolution, memory hogging monster of a game, and that’s the way we like it. There will also be a 2D lower quality version released for devices that can not handle 3D graphics, which will be pretty much anything not an iPhone.

If the all touch interface on the iPhone is not your style when it comes to games, then the iControlPad may just be for you. The peripheral enables your iPhone to be in a casing that allows for a PSP like feel. It adds physical buttons to the iPhone for the purpose of playing games. The iControlPad will be providing full SDK support, and also source code so developers can get their games to work with the unit.

The peripheral works by connecting to the iPhone’s dock. According to the designer, support for the iControlPad is already built in to most of the game emulators, and they are sending out more units to try to get more universal support. The device will have to get around one problem though, the SDK does not allow unprejudiced access to the dock connector.
The device as of now is in its prototype stage. They promise that the final version of the unit will be “much more sleek and fitting”. You can check out there website here, where they have a status blog and contact information.

The iPhone is an excellent target for gaming. The device’s glorious multi touch display is very intuitive for gaming, and the device has a relatively beefy internal specification sheet. Gaming and the iPhone are no strangers, and that is putting it mildly. Until now though, there have been no real 3D games. Kingdom Lores is out now, and it the first of its kind.

The game is being developed by Marco Giorgini by using a custom OpenGL rendering engine. This provides excellent rendering of the graphics, and as seen above, the iPhone does a great job. The game can be played in portrait mode, as seen here. Or in landscape, which will provide a first person view of the game play. The object of the game is to explore territories and slay dragons.
The game is not available in Installer just yet. You can get the game though, and manually load it onto your device. It can be had here. The game seems somewhat complete, and hopefully will be made available very soon.
