Rumor: Second Gen iPhone dropping next spring?

Ben Reitzes of UBS seems pretty confident that there will be a new version of the iPhone by March of 2008. The guy got a tip from someone in the iPhone supply chain that he believes to be true.

iPhone nano 2G

The guy is dead certain it will be a second gen iPhone too, not an iPhone Nano, a new Newton, or anything else like that. Its definitely going not going to be an iPod with Internet calling either, its going to be the next iPhone.

Rumor: 16GB iPhone

Alright, so instead of sitting around, questioning the legitimacy of these photos, and trying to figure out how they might have faked them, lets just go with the fact that a 16GB iPhone makes perfect sense and roll on. The iPod Touch maxes out at 16GB, the iPhone has only one SKU right now, which hasn’t happened with an Apple product in forever.

16GB iPhone on the way

So, a 16GB iPhone makes perfect sense. Now they only question is, would they just add $100 to the current price of the iPhone to keep it differentiated from the iPod Touch, or would they drop the 8GB iPhone price and put the 16GB iPhone at the same price point as the 16GB iPod Touch?

Rumor: Apple rolling out their own library of Web 2.0 web apps?

Its beginning to look like that might be the case. There is a website at www.apple.com/webapps but it doesn’t work right now.

iPhone Web Apps

There are also hints to the database within the recent downloads RSS feed where you can find some of the apps listed. There is Blackjack 21, Solitaire, and 101 Cookbooks all for the iPhone.

Rumor: Apple opening iPhone to 3rd party developers with release of Leopard

There are rumors going around that the totally irrelevant release of Leopard might also give way to the iPhone being opened up to third party developers for new applications. Like I said, the two are totally irrelevant, but neither one is worthy of a separate press conference, so I guess the combination of the two announcements could kind of make sense in that respect.

iPhone third-party application installer

They aren’t going to open it up to just anyone, but well established companies, especially those well known for producing mobile apps are rumored to have been getting contacted by Apple recently. Its already fairly well known that EA is porting its entire line of iPod games to the new iPhone/iPod platforms so they can be loaded onto those devices, but there is rumored to be a lot more companies being approached.

Rumor: Could the iPhone be getting text, pic, and IM services?

Worse yet, will it cost you extra? Its looking like both might be answered with a yes. Maybe not though, depending on how you read the email, does it mean you have to purchase an extra messaging plan or is it referring to the data/messaging plan that already comes with the iPhone service plans?
iPhone messaging text message
A gentleman by the name of Jordan apparently received a txt message from AT&T informing him that his messaging package now included text, picture, and instant messages for the same price of $19.99 per month. It also added that no action was required, but that’s got to be wrong since that IM software isn’t going to get on the iPhone on its own.
