Nike+ coming to iPhone, iPod touch

Nike plans to expand its Nike+ program to include the iPhone and iPod touch, according to a new report.

Stuff.tv, visiting Nike’s headquarters in Oregon, said a Nike+ spokesperson confirmed the expansion, adding that it could also make use of the devices’ Wi-Fi capabilities (and possibly the iPhone’s upcoming 3G connection) to allow users to update their training log on the fly, without the need for docking with a computer.

This news follows a set of recently published Apple patent applications, which outlined a digital fitness program for iTunes and touchscreen digital media devices.

David Beckham century gift - a golden iPod Touch

Former England captain David Beckham will be dancing for joy after his team-mates clubbed together to buy him a special something to celebrate him reaching the elite 100-cap club for his country.

Beckham, 32, who reached his century during last week's friendly match with France in Paris, has been given an iPod Touch by his colleagues.

As you can see it is not just your standard Apple product but rather a golden 32-gigabyte personalised version of the iPod Touch to mark the occasion.

Beckham, who made his England debut in September 1996 against Moldova, was picked for new coach Fabio Capello's second national squad, after missing the friendly with Swtizerland due to lack of match fitness.

The LA Galaxy midfielder started the France game in his preferred right-midfield position before being replaced by David Bentley just after the hour mark.

Beckham looks like to add to his 100 caps following Capello's post-match appraisal of his performance, and with just four men ahead of him there is a small possibility the Leytonstone-born footballer could surpass former goalkeeper Peter Shilton's record of 125 England appearances if he is able to continue playing until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as he desires.

In the meantime he can enjoy listening to his wife's back catalogue on his ÂŁ600 ipod touch - he certainly has enough storage space with 32 GB.

Apple: iTunes is #1 Music Retailer in the U.S.

Apple announced on Thursday that they have surpassed Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the U.S. The numbers come from the NPD Group.

"We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. "We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone."

Apple said that the announcement was "based on data from market research firm the NPD Group’s MusicWatch survey that captures consumer reported past week unit purchases and counts one CD representing 12 tracks, excluding wireless transactions. The iTunes Store became the largest music retailer in the U.S. based on the amount of music sold during January and February 2008."

Apple has been steadily climbing the charts in this respect. Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, has shown the sales position of Apple's iTunes at major keynotes and the suggestion was always that Wal-Mart, in Apple's sights, would eventually be surpassed by iTunes. Thursday's announcement punctuates those keynote slides even more, and chances are, there will be a big smile on Mr. Jobs face during WWDC's keynote.

Report: Amazon now #2 digital music retailer

Amazon’s MP3 store has become the number two digital music retailer, according to USA Today. The newspaper’s report claims that much of Amazon’s success is attributable to cooperation from the four major record labels, all of which gave Amazon permission to sell their music without DRM, while some have denied Apple the same opportunity.

Apple has stated that it hoped to offer 50% of its catalog in DRM-free format by the end of last year, but failed to meet the number. “The labels think Apple has too much influence,” said Phil Leigh, an analyst at Inside Digital Media.

Ted Cohen, former EMI executive and managing partner of the Tag Strategic consulting firm, said Amazon’s store “removed some of the stranglehold iTunes had on the market.” iTunes currently offers 2 million songs available without DRM, according to the report, while Amazon offers roughly 4.5 million DRM-free tracks.

Despite the labels’ prior claims that DRM-free music sales would encourage piracy, the new offerings do not appear to be hurting online music sales, which are up 26% so far this year, according to Neilsen SoundScan.

Pete Baltaxe, director of digital music with Amazon, said “Songs sold without DRM, at high quality, with album art, that’s the best way to get people to buy music instead of stealing it.”

Apple plans iPhone, iPod Touch music rentals

According to the Financial Times, Apple is currently negotiating with major music labels to offer an optional unlimited music rental service for iPods and iPhones, as well as an alternative subscription-based monthly service for iPhone users.

Under the “comes with music” plan, the Times reports, premium versions of the iPod and iPhone would be bundled with “free access to its entire iTunes music library,” likely for the lifetime of the device, and enable consumers to “keep up to 40 or 50 tracks a year, which they would retain even if they changed their device or their subscription lapses.”

A separate subscription plan would offer iPhone users monthly access to the iTunes music catalog for a recurring fee.

While Apple has not commented on the topic, and has previously dismissed the value of music subscription plans, “executives familiar with the negotiations” claim that the offering depends on Apple’s willingness to pay more than an initially offered total of $20 or so per device.

Nokia has already planned a similar offering for its cell phones with a total payout of nearly $80 per phone.
