Will iPhone change the music industry?

iPhone World Ads: iPhone Accessories - Free iPhone - Unlimited iPhone Downloads - iPhone Games - Free iPod Touch

During this year’s Macworld Steve Jobs announced that Apple has sold more than 4 million iPhones since its launch. Despite owning only 2 percent of the smart-phone market and less than 1 percent of the overall mobile-phone market, iPhone still manages to keep up its reputation as the main shaker.

As the New York Times reports, Google announced that it received more traffic from iPhones this Christmas than from any other mobile device. One of the main reasons why iPhone users have been visiting the web so often could be the fact that software developers are still limited to creating Web-based applications. Will that change when Apple will introduce it’s iPhone SDK in February and native applications will be able to run on it without the user having to hack the device?

Apple has not revealed, however, how many iPhone users have bought music using iPhone’s iTunes interface. As we learn from other sources this has not appeared to be iPhone users’ favourite activity. A recent M:Metrics study, for example, shows that 20 percent of mobile phone users internationally listen to music on their mobile devices. However, most of them gets their music from other sources than a mobile music service like iTunes. They prefer to download their tunes from their computers’ archives or other sources.

Music industry is keeping an eye open on the iPhone. Music labels are concerned with the fact that more and more mobile phone users are sharing music files or obtaining them without using official music services. Their income from the carrier deals may be seriously reduced if more mobile devices become more open-access like iPhone. The executive of one of the labels has put it this way: “As more phones become Wi-Fi-enabled, the need to go through official pipes to pay the piper is not always going to be there.”

Some companies like Alltel for example are already offering services that allow customers to stream and download digital-rights-management-free digital music files from their home computer to their mobile phone from anywhere in the operator’s service area.

AT&T Introduces Enterprise Billing Solution

iPhone World Ads: iPhone Accessories - Free iPhone - Unlimited iPhone Downloads - iPhone Games - Free iPod Touch

For those nay-sayers who weren’t comfortable switching over to the iPhone for this-or-that reason, or dubbing the iPhone’s billing rates as unsuitable for business, AT&T has released a new two-year service agreement for enterprise businesses.

Ranging from $45-60, they include unlimited domestic web, email, and messaging. There’s also an included $25 plan for 20MB (or $60 for 50MB) per month, added in. Overall, this probably isn’t enough to widely domesticate business-usage of the iPhone for those already avoiding the device, but it’s still not a bad deal. See details below:

iPhone provider in China is still unknown

iPhone World Ads: iPhone Accessories - Free iPhone - Unlimited iPhone Downloads - iPhone Games - Free iPod Touch

After Apple halted talks with China Mobile, the only contenders left are China Unicom and China Telecom.

Talks with China Mobile were halted due to a disagreement over revenue sharing, according to unnamed industry insider.

So the only 2 companies big enough to deal with Apple is China Telecom and China Unicom. Unicom has smaller market share then China Mobile, and is more likely to accept Apples request for high sharing portion. On the other Hand, China Telecom has no mobile license yet. Still, the uncertainty goes on!

4 Million iPhones sold, 6 Million to go!

iPhone World Ads: iPhone Accessories - Free iPhone - Unlimited iPhone Downloads - iPhone Games - Free iPod Touch

Steve Jobs said at Macworld Expo 2008 that the iPhone is selling at an average of 20,000 units a day, and that it has sold over 4 million iPhones to date.

However, it is doubtful that it will reach Apple’s estimated 10 million sold, with just 5 months remaining until iPhone turns 1 year old. In fact to reach its target, sales would have to be doubled. With complaints of pricing by many people already (though it’s certainly not too expensive if 4 million already purchased it), curiosity of how Apple’s probable introduction of the cheaper iPhone in the future will be high.

iPhone buyers in UK said that the device is just too expensive to be afforded so broadly. Either way, the iPhone has hit the industry hard enough in the one year it’s almost been out already.

AT&T corporate plan for the iPhone coming soon?

iPhone World Ads: iPhone Accessories - Free iPhone - Unlimited iPhone Downloads - iPhone Games - Free iPod Touch

Gizmodo claims that AT&T is said to be preparing to make the iPhone more attractive for the subscribers of corporate and business accounts. According to Gizmodo’s rumor the official launch will take place on January 21st, which is tomorrow. The model available for the businessman is said to be the same as the regular iPhone. The main difference is in the tariff, which is supposedly eligible for a $25 per month corporate discount.

The price of the handset itself will supposedly remain the same, but there will be a special activation process. The new tariff will supposedly be available for current and new corporate and business account holders.

But at the same time, 9to5Mac reports that according to their information this corporate plan will be available only in the summer, and will apply only to companies that have over 100 phones working with AT&T. 9to5Mac speculates that this service will be available when the 3G iPhone will come out, and claims that this information comes from an AT&T store.

While these two stories have some common elements, the difference between January 21st launch and summer 2008 launch is quite enormous. Since there’s no way to verify any of this, we’ll leave it as it is, an unconfirmed rumor.
