Patents: Proximity-Based Bluetooth Pairing, Automatic Contact Info Via Email

The US Patent and Trademark Office recently released two new patent applications filed by Apple that promise to make life considerably easier for us iPhone users. The patents would allow a user to pair a wireless device to an iPhone simply by bring it in close contact with each other, while the other would allow users to fill out missing address book information through email.

Patents: Individual App Preferences, Missed Message Notifications

Two Apple patent filings were released by the US Patent & Trademark Office recently that could mean some improvements to the iPhone's interface. One is for a way for users to change preferences for one or more apps directly from the home screen, and another is for a better way to notify the user of a missed message.

Docking Station for Apple Ultraportable detailed in latest patent

In other patent news, Apple has further fuelled expectations for an ultraportable MacBook with the filing of an application that details an iMac-like base station into which a laptop-sized device can be slotted so as to take advantage of full-sized keyboard, mouse and screen.  Gizmodo, who unearthed the patent, threw together this mockup of how the system could work, with the ultraslim notebook sliding into the side of the monitor, which has the same ports and connectivity as an iMac desktop machine.

Leaked firmware ‘incomplete’: Will add Copy & Paste and other functionality

Analysis of what’s in and what’s missing from the leaked iPhone v1.1.3 firmware continues in earnest, with the current state of thought being that while the software Gear Live have acquired is seemingly legitimate, it may not in fact be in its final form.  Authenticity for the as-yet-unannounced v1.1.3 gained support from some patent-digging over at hrmpf.com, who managed to match up the ‘wiggling’ icons and rearrangeable Home screen to a previously granted Apple patent; compare their animation (constructed from patent illustrations) with the video Gear Live released:

Visual Voicemail prompts $360m suit against Apple

“Build it and they will come” they said, but perhaps if Apple had known “they” meant patent lawyers they might’ve been less impressed.  Klausner Technologies Inc. has filed a $360m suit against the makers of the iPhone regarding its Visual Voicemail interface, claiming that it impinges on US patent 5,572,576 granted in 1996, which documents a system of displaying messages in a selectable-list format.

 Visual Voicemail is patently contentious
