iPhone 3G: Can I activate it at home?

iPhone 3GThere have been many rumors floating around about whether or not new iphone users will be able to go and buy their new iphones and activate it at home on iTunes. There was speculation from an article posted today that there may be a possiblity you can still activate your new iPhone 3G at home. Under AT&T you may be able to sign an intent to obtain a two year contract, and then take the phone home and activate it through iTunes. The only alternative to speeding up this activation process in the store would be the following:

“customers may be able to agree to terms and select a new rate plan at home before July 11th, and then print and bring with them on July 11th a document that AT&T and Apple reps can quickly scan and verify before handing over a new iPhone. This would speed up the first-day sales process and function similar to the $100 iPhone credit coupon offered following last year’s iPhone launch.”

Though nothing has been confirmed, many rumors will continue, AT&T is expected to release finalized details closer to July 11th.

AT&T says no iPhone 3G tethering

The iPhone 3G is twice as fast as the first-gen iPhone, yet only half the price.  You’re probably wondering if you’ll be able to tether the iPhone 3G (tethering: using it as a cellular modem for laptops - a service AT&T and other carriers offer for many phones on the market) to your laptop.  The short answer is no.  The long answer is no.  Is it AT&T’s fault or Apple’s?  According to AT&T, the ball is in Apple’s court.

Jobs would have showed off the feature during the keynote at WWDC 2008, but he didn’t.  That doesn’t mean it’s not possible.  So should Apple flip the switch to enable tethering on the iPhone 3G, it’s possible AT&T will find a way to charge extra for the option whether you plan on using it or not.  It’s a little too early to worry about that right now.

However according to AT&T spokesman, Mark A. Siegel, who spoke with iPhone Atlas earlier this week, AT&T will not be supporting a PAM plan for the iPhone 3G. The only available data plan for the iPhone will be the new $30 consumer unlimited data and visual voice mail plan and the $45 business data plan. The latter is charged when a person makes an enterprise type connection to Exchange or a Blackberry server for email or messaging. - iPhone Atlas

3 to bring iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau

In a very brief press release, 3 has announced that they will be bringing the iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau, two markets where as of now, the iPhone is not officially available. Of all the countries and territories that 3 has coverage in, Hong Kong and Macau are the only ones that 3 has been rewarded a contract to carry and sell the iPhone in.

“Hong Kong and Macau, 29th May 2008 - Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited today announced that it has signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau later this year.” -Press Release

That is the whole press release. So there is quite a lack of details at the moment, but it has been assumed by some that this is the 3G iPhone. This would make sense, as there are 3G networks in both locations, and why bring the original iPhone “later this year”, when there will already be an upgrade that makes the device old news.

AT&T hiring temporary workers for 3G iPhone launch?

AT&T is hiring some workers to take temporary positions at AT&T stores. The listing says from June 16th to August 16th, the temporary workers will have jobs. This is not unique to AT&T, surprisingly enough. Last year, in anticipation of the original iPhone, AT&T did the same thing, so that there would be no shortage of help to push the device out the door.

This time around they are doing the exact same thing. June 19th is a little bit of a delay of what we have heard, which is immediate launch of the device after the rumored WWDC announcement. Either way though, the device will be here soon. Another day, another leak from AT&T. They keep one tight secret keeping machine there don’t they?
