Well another week of iPhone news has gone by. This week has been somewhat slow compared to what we usually see. Quit possibly because everyone is counting down the days to WWDC. That’s because we are hearing rumors that the 3G iPhone will not be the only thing Apple is going to awe us with at the event.
Of course, this is referring to the mystery device that is rumored to drop at WWDC. We heard rumors about the device, and then even a confirmation by Intel’s German unit, saying that the device will be powered by their new Atom processor. These comments were of course retracted, and dismissed by Intel as a example of a device that could be powered by Atom.
The iPhone will see some new distribution in a few more countries according to Orange. The new countries include Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets. It is expected that the new markets will get the device by years’ end.
WWDC is going to be the place to be this year. Unfortunately though, unless you have already been accepted, you are not going to get in. The event is now fully booked. 3G iPhone rumors are slowly pouring in still. We have heard rumors that the 3G iPhone may come in up to three different color choices. This is not all, as we are also hearing rumors that the device will come with GPS, Mobile TV, and even video conferencing. This would be an amazing addition to the 3G iPhone, and with all that 3G action, will be welcomed with open arms.
An option for ‘iPhone Black’ showed up on AT&T’s website as an option for choosing your device. The option was found next to the normal iPhone option, which sparked a wave of rumors about the 3G iPhone launching soon. AT&T of course denied the rumors almost immediately, giving this response.
“The reference to “iPhone Black†was simply a temporary placeholder used over the weekend for a scheduled catalog update. It was meant to temporarily distinguish the various iPhone models-4GB, 8GB and 16GB-but was never reassigned. It should be corrected on the site by now.â€Â Brad Mays, PR for AT&T.

It seems Intel would like to shy away from comments made by their German manager yesterday. We saw yesterday a rumor originating from a German language source, that said that Intel had confirmed that a higher resolution iPhone like device would be powered by their new Atom processor. According to Intel however, these were general remarks, about what their new processor “might” power.
Intel says that the whole mess stemmed from a poor German to English translation of the article, posted in a German language version of ZDNet. It is interesting though, that the original article we saw posted yesterday from the source, is different than the one that has been posted now.

Hopefully the quote sounded a lot better in German than the translated version shown here. It is an interesting story, as other sources attending the same event, that heard the German Intel manager speak, did not say he said anything about the iPhone. Others, say they did though. It is a messy rumor, and the only way we are going to know for sure is when WWDC rolls around.

Apple have released its plans for WWDC 2008, due to kick off on Monday June 9th. The event will open with a keynote from Steve Jobs, expected to be resplendant in a new, exciting outfit, before focussing on OS X Leopard and OS X for iPhone. There’s no mention, of course, of a new 3G iPhone, although speculation continues.
The conference, which runs for five days in total, will feature in-depth sessions and hands-on labs for developers working with the OS X iPhone 2.0 software. It will also cover the technicalities of the iPhone SDK and the App Store. Apple’s own engineers will be on hand to jeer at the less capable show coders where they’ve gone wrong.
Meanwhile OS X Leopard developers will have their own coding sessions and technology labs. In fact they’re welcome to bring in their own code for advice, including interface design and implementation, application frameworks, security, localization and networking. Registration is open now.

This week started off slow as far as iPhone news, but by the end of the week, things had picked up considerably. A very interesting piece of information was found in the Network.plist file of the latest beta of iPhone firmware 2.0. The option to toggle 3G on and off. It is suggested that the preference will not show up on EDGE only devices, and that is what we would figure.
The ongoing flip flopping of the AT&T free WiFi continues. This is the second time the free WiFi has been pulled. AT&T is saying that the listing on their website showing the WiFi access was a human error. This is the 4th human error then apparently. When will the craziness end?
There is some serious iPhone shortages going around the last few days. There are no iPhones left in the U.K. or the online Apple store. The shortage is rumored to be Apple preparing for the 3G iPhone by clearing the shelves of the current stock.
Pictures of what is rumored to be the 3G iPhone surfaced on a phone forum based in China. In th photos, the device is glossy white, as opposed to the rumored glossy black. The device fits the description of the rumored dimensions. It is larger in the middle than at the sides, and the bottom is redesigned to fit the rumored dimensions.
The 5th beta of the iPhone SDK was released this week. It was not immediately known what improvements there were, but we have a small list now. Some of the new features that were found include the option for push email. It is the smallest SDK yet, weighing in at only 1.08GB. There were some minor changes to certain libraries as well.
We round out the week in review with the news of the Installer application getting an update. The update brings application search to Installer. Although as of now the search function needs a little improvement, it is a good idea and is very useful.

Vodafone have issued a short press release confirming that they will be selling the iPhone in ten markets later on this year. These will include Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Previous sources had tipped the Indian deal, but this is a significant step for the carrier overall.
Prior to the launch of the iPhone in Europe, Vodafone was heavily tipped to be a key player. It was a surprise, then, when O2, Orange and T-Mobile ended negotiations with the all-important UK, French and German distribution deals. Vodafone later took T-Mobile Germany to the courts claiming their exclusive deal was “anticompetitive“.
While nothing is confirmed, the fact that the list Vodafone have released contains no markets in which the iPhone is presently sold suggests that either negotiations there are still ongoing or, perhaps more likely, that the existing carriers have been given - and taken - first refusal on the 3G iPhone.

Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.Â
