In good news for both Apple and Carphone Warehouse, Financial Times is reporting that Carphone’s shares rose on FTSE 100 past Friday despite most of the other shares ending the day in negative.
Carphone Warehouse is of course one of two UK Apple iPhone distributors, and its shares rise is attributed due to traders’ belief that the device has been “selling like hot cakes” over the Christmas — although the official sales stats were not released as of yet.

Financial Times is quoting Steve Clayton, analyst at Mirabaud Securities, who stated that there was “fantastic consumer response” to the iPhone, while noting that it’s a “sufficiently innovative product to be assured of selling well, especially in an exclusivity situation“.

French Apple iPhone distributor Orange yesterday announced having sold 70,000 iPhones in the month following iPhone’s French launch on November 29 2007, with 48% of buyers opening a new line with Orange.
82% of all iPhone owners that use Orange subscribe to Orange’s special “Orange for iPhone” plan packages that allow for unlimited data transfer and range in costs from 49 to 119 Euros.

Nevertheless, these 70,000 sales show only a limited degree of success for Orange, as the company earlier announced targets of 50,000 to 100,000 sold iPhones for this first month.
Although in good news for the company it reports that less than 3,500 (5%) of these units were sold (really) unlocked, as compared to previous estimates of 20%.

Despite the rumors passed around last year (still can’t believe we can say that now..), O2 is still standing firm, stating that they will hit the quota set by themselves.

Rumors started before Christmas of last year, that O2’s sales were going poorly in terms of iPhone movement. O2’s CEO Matthew Key then went on to deny these claims, and established the plan to sell 200,000 iPhones by “early January”.
Furthermore, 60% or more of O2’s iPhone users are said to be using over the 25MB data allotted to them, compared to just over 1% of other phones (which isn’t a surprise, considering what the iPhone can do compared to most phones).
Either way, it’s almost “early January”, so I suppose we’ll see the actual numbers soon. Will it affect O2’s exclusivity to the 3G iPhone later this year? Probably, as nothing is set in stone. The UK provider already has rivals set on the same goal, since nabbing exclusivity on the 3G iPhone probably means big bucks.

Despite not being officially available otherwise in the country, a discount chain of stores that sells groceries - Penny Markt - is going to begin selling unlocked iPhones for 799 Euros each, or just under $1200. What’s more, T-Mobile provides actively for the iPhone in Austria, but the chain plans to sell them completely unlocked.
There are no real details as to why this small chain is allowed to sell unlocked iPhones, and the only information is available in German on Penny Markt’s website. This is the first time the iPhone has been available in the country, outside of personal imports.

Update: soon after our “Unlocked French Orange Apple iPhones not really unlocked” story was posted, official French Apple Phone distributor Orange issued a statement denying any wrongdoing.
As the story went, “unlocked” iPhones sold in France are supposedly not unlocked for non-French operators’ foreign SIM cards, but rather have a country-specific lock installed, allowing them to be used only with French operators.

According to an Orange representative: “Once legally (through Orange Customer Service) unlocked, the iPhone will operate with any SIM card, including foreign ones. But some applications like ‘Visual Voicemail’ may not work abroad.”
Also, according to the spokesman, less than the previously reported 20% of iPhones are being sold unlocked in France. not surprisingly — as one can unlock his iPhone in many French third party mobile phone stores for prices starting at 25 Euros, which is less than Orange charges for such a service. In comparison iPhones that were unlocked by Orange retail for 649 Euro, with an extra charge of 100 Euro applying if the unlock procedure was done within 6 months since the handset was purchased.
