iPhone Jailbreak: Do You Jailbreak? (Reader Poll)

iPhone Jailbreak

iPhone Jailbreak methods spring up around the web each time Apple rolls out an iPhone firmware update. I performed a Jailbreak on my iPhone last August so I could upload custom ringtones to my phone before Apple let you buy ringtones on iTunes.

Although Apple prohibits it, the great thing about Jailbreaking is that you can add all sorts of third-party applications to your iPhone and greatly increase its functionality. In February, Apple will finally allow third-party developers to create native applications for the iPhone, so there may no longer be a need for Jailbreak.

In the meantime, after each iPhone firmware update, the iPhone is restored and the Jailbreak you worked so tediously to complete is undone. Then, iPhone developers work hastily to come up with a new iPhone Jailbreak method, and you have to start all over — either that or don’t update your iPhone firmware at all.

I gave up on Jailbreaking my iPhone because a) I felt it was too much of a hassle, both to install the Jailbreak and to keep up with new Jailbreak methods, and b) because I feared voiding my warranty if I ever had a problem with my iPhone and had to take it Jailbroken into the Apple Store. What about you?

Do you Jailbreak?

iPhone v1.1.3 Jailbreak hack (Mac)

iPhone World:

The Mac version of iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak hack is now available. Apparently the interface is not as fancy as in the Windows v1.1.3 jailbreak hack, but it works nevertheless.

Download: iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak hack for Mac

MAC VERSION - Download the 1.1.3 package maker and open it, then run Run_This. Read carefully, press Enter when necessary, and the image will be uploaded to your phone.

And here are the instructions from the other version, which are still useful here.

- Start with a 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 jailbroken phone with Installer.app installed.
- Plug in your phone via USB to your computer.
- Download, extract, and run
- Program will determine what firmware you are running on your phone and make sure you can run the update.
- Program will then guide you through the process of obtaining and modifying the 1.1.3 firmware (make sure to read everything thoroughly).
- Program will upload the new firmware image to your phone. Note that this only puts the file on your phone and does not modify it at all, yet.
- When finishes (should take about 10 minutes), it will tell you to go to Installer and install the “1.1.3 soft upgrade” package. Do that.
- When the installer finishes (this should take another 10-15 minutes), your phone should reboot with a fresh activated 1.1.3 firmware.

And now for the credits:

Props to everyone on the Dev Team, including (in no particular order): netkas, NerveGas, asap18, bgm, Bugout, bushing, chris_, dinopio, drudge, Fred_, gray, MuscleNerd, natetrue, pr3d4t0r, roxfan, Turbo, Zf[strike], np101137, pumpkin, and kroo, along with many contributors who wish to remain anonymous.

And props to Fred_ and planetbeing, who were among the first with a 1.1.3 jailbroken iphone, and Zibri, by whom this method was largely developed. Additionally to Shaun Erickson, who packaged the Installer half of the upgrade, and runs most of the application packaging for the iPhone. He’s looking for a job too - hire him!

Additionally, members of the iPhone Elite team also played a part.

iBrickr: iPhone v1.1.3 Jailbreak (Windows)

iPhone World:

iPhone Dev Team and iPhone Elite Team have put their minds together and finally managed to release an iPhone firmware v1.1.3 jailbreak to the public, in the form of a new version of iBrickr.

To use this iPhone v1.1.3 jailbreak hack you will first need to have 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 jailbroked phone. Once your iPhone is ready for the above requirement, you will need the iBrickr image creator (It’s only available on Windows for now, sorry Mac users) which you can download directly here!

Then do the following:
- Plug in your phone via USB to your computer and run iBrickr.
- iBrickr will determine what firmware you are running on your phone and make sure you can run the update.
- iBrickr will then guide you through the process of obtaining and modifying the 1.1.3 firmware (make sure to read everything thoroughly).
- iBrickr will upload the new firmware image to your phone. Note that this only puts the file on your phone and does not modify it at all, yet.
- When iBrickr finishes (should take about 10 minutes), it will tell you to go to Installer and install the “1.1.3 soft upgrade” package. Do that.
- When the installer finishes (this should take another 10-15 minutes), your phone should reboot with a fresh activated 1.1.3 firmware.

There is also a way to get Google Maps Locations working with jailbroken 1.1.3:

*You must have a legal simcard (at&t, orange, o2,t-mobile)
*jailbreak it (see above).
*Then just replace /usr/libexec/lockdownd with original one, from 1.1.3
*Your phone will have Google Maps Locations working.

Now you may be wondering how this jailbreak works. Here is a breakdown:

- iBrickr grabs the 1.1.3 iPhone firmware image and extracts, decrypts, and decompresses the disk image.
- Then it applies a patch, jailbreaking the disk image and activating it, and installing Installer.app.
- It uploads this new modified image to the phone, as 113_upgrade_image.bin.
- The “1.1.3 soft upgrade” app flashes the phone with the image and reboots.
- You have a perfect, jailbroken, upgraded 1.1.3 phone, with all your settings and music intact!
