PartFoundry locoGPS iPhone module hack works with Google maps

Engadget posted an update on the recently revealed GPS module iPhone hack from PartFoundry that we reported on last week.

New details are now available about it: this iPhone GPS module that now received an official name — locoGPS — will only work with a jailbreaked iPhone. Based on the SiRF Star III chip, the locoGPS module from PartFoundry will work as an extension to your Google Maps (see the demonstration video below).
locoGPS iPhone

However, the fact that this device works based on Google Maps (that recently came up with a GPS-like feature, although not for iPhone owners) and would require an EDGE connection to actually display the maps certainly eats at its usability. After all, wouldn’t you like to have a GPS device that doesn’t use EDGE (and accumulate according bills) every time you want to check the map? At least that’s the idea with regular GPS devices…

Partfoundry’s locoGPS modile will be offered at the price of USD $89 in February 2008 — that is when the official Apple iPhone Software Development Kit should be available (what is not clear, however, is why PartFoundry needs wait for the SDK to be released if the device has to be used with jailbreaked iPhones — please do let us know if you have any ideas).

iPhone StealthSIM: unlock iPhone v1.1.2 firmware with StealthSIM

Yet another new solution for unlocking the Apple iPhone v1.1.2 for use with normally unauthorized mobile carriers is now available — without really hacking your iPhone. Almost.

Much like the SonicSIM iPhone v1.1.2 unlock method we’ve discussed just today, this is a hardware based solution. As stated by its manufacturer, Stealth SIM requires no modification of the baseband on your iPhone. Instead you use your regular SIM card along with the StealthSIM.

StealthSIM is guaranteed by its manufacturer to work with iPhones of all models — 4GB and 8GB, USA and European, and all firmware versions including v1.1.2. And according to forum posts it really does work. The installation instructions are rather straightforward as well.

StealthSIM iPhone unlocker retails for around USD $90 via distributors and on eBay.

SonicSIM: iPhone v1.1.2 unlocked?

Although attempts to break iPhone v1.1.2 firmware’s provider lock protection via software ways so far proved to be fruitless and even prompted a full open source code release of AnySIM iPhone unlocker by its developers (who are hoping that this will motivate someone to break v1.1.2 iPhone unlock protection), now there’s hope for iPhone owners everywhere to have their v1.1.2 headsets unlocked, all without using any software hacks.

This story begins with a demonstration video (below) of a certain SIM card device called SonicSIM being used to unlock an iPhone with v1.1.2 firmware being posted online.

Upon further examination SonicSIM appears to be a successor to TurboSIM, a way to “sort of” unlock your iPhone we discussed earlier this year, by tricking it into thinking you’ve got the proper SIM card using dual boot.

However, posters on several forums claim that this video is fake. Whatever the case is, since we don’t have access to one of these SonicSIMs, you be the judge.

Newsflash: iPhone CAN record videos!

Although one of the main complaints about the iPhone so far was its inability to record videos, all this is (maybe) about to change with a third party program/hack for the iPhone called Drunknbass.

While essentially in its beta stage, this iPhone program allows you to record a five second 10FPS video of whatever you want with your iPhone.

And the good news are that the final version of the program is supposed to be able to support videos of unlimited length, at real video camera speed (up to 45FPS).

As is the case with all third party iPhone programs, Drunknbass for iPhone requires you to have a jailbreaked iPhone, sorry!

Visit the official project page in order to download the program

iPhone Hack-Attacks (Among Others) More Likely in 2008 and Beyond

Along with the Chinese Olympics and Web 2.0 apps, the iPhone is among one of the highest targets on the list of suspected attacks in the future.

Because of the growing use of Mac and Apple products, more and more people will be using them - not unlike PCs and mobile phones, making them priority targets waiting to be struck by hackers and the like.

Types of attacks are linked to spam (what’s new?), viruses, and “Vishing” attacks. Vishing is a new one, using VOIP (or Voice Over Internet Protocol), or vocal monitors, to take personal information from you when you least expect it.

People will start seeing an increase in automated calls to their phones, which is part of “vishing”, though if you’re smart, there’s no better defense than an early warning.

Luckily there’s people just as talented working around the clock to counter and catch these absolutely disgusting people, and Apple (despite jailbreaking the iPhone itself) will also keep updating iPhone software to counter it.
