Rumor bin: Apple iPhone to use Intel Silverthorne, Moorestown processors

According to a report by Apple Insider, Apple has plans to switch from Samsung processors to Intel’s Silverthorne for iPhone v2.0.

That should result in higher processing speeds for the iPhone and less expenses for Apple, while the devices could become sufficiently slimmer as a result of Silverthorne platform use due to integration of all main circuitry inside one very small chip (see photo of the Silverthorne below).

Apple Insider quotes unnamed sources speculating that Apple will also be using Intel’s Silverthorne mobile platform in a speculated on Apple line of super portable touchscreen personal computers, possibly due to be introduced at MacWorld 2008.

Furthermore, the report states the company might use the upcoming Moorestown mobile platform from Intel, in 2009 or 2010.

During the last IDF, Intel execs called Moorestown the ‘chip the iPhone would have wanted.’

3G iPhone only in Mid 2008?

Although the rumors are abound about Apple presenting a new 3G model of the iPhone at MacWorld 2008 in January, industry analysts don’t quite buy it.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster believes that 3G iPhones won’t appear on the market before May or June 2008. But in other, good news, he thinks it’s possible that Apple will increase iPhone’s storage to 16GB while keeping the same price when it happens.

And American Technology’s Shaw Wu states pretty much the same thing: 3G iPhones will only appear in mid-to-second half of 2008. Among the lead factors for that he mentions that 3G components require as much as 35-40% more power than EDGE, and that appropriate components will also cost around $15 more in comparison.

Furthermore, according to Mr Wu, 3G is “still a relatively niche technology and not widely deployed, particularly here in the USA.”. And in that he sounds almost exactly like Steve Jobs.

But, surprisingly, the world does not revolve around the USA, and in Europe 3G is a really requested feature. So the wait might be shorter than expected by analysts — at least if we’ll believe this Spanish 3G iPhone in May 2008 rumor.

Rumor Bin: TomTom GPS and iPhone to mix?

According to a rumor started through MacWorld, a TomTom GPS module for the iPhone, which, ofcourse, doesn’t currently exist…or does it?

TomTom hasn’t released any information on this — yet, that is — but one thing was pointed out about the picture: It doesn’t actually appear to be a route to Rotterdam, despite what the picture shows. This could simply be a demo, though, so it’s not confirmed. (P.S. Sorry for the quality of the picture, but we did not take it)

Despite attempts at supporting GPS by Navizon and simulating to within a close proximity of your location, there isn’t any actual GPS for the iPhone.

GPS would be a logical move by Apple, as more and more people get lost, and more devices support it. Though, GPS is also one of the only features an iPhone lacks besides making brew in the morning.

Two New iPhones in 2008?

According to researchers with the investment bank Goldman Sachs, they say that after meeting with key component suppliers in Asia that they have much reason to believe that Apple will introduce two ‘revisions’ of the iPhone in 2008. On top of this interesting news, a supposed overhaul to Apple TV during the second half of the year is also expected.

Apple will refresh its entire Mac line-up throughout 2008, but information about the potential launch of a subnotebook was scarce, with one supplier saying that the product may be pushed out, citing possible design issues,” says analyst David Bailey.

5-iphones.jpg

Both the iPod Touch and nano are seeing strength while iPod shuffle demand seems stable, which should cause blended average selling prices (ASPs) to come in above our $150 estimate,” he continued.

It was said that he believed that being developed is a second-generation iPhone in the final stages of design, expected for release around the second half of 2008. Features were simply thought to be 3G and perhaps minor technical upgrades, though the other iPhone being mentioned will probably have “a smaller upgrade with more flash memory earlier in the year.” Mr. Bailey said.

According to Asian contracts of his, he had reason to believe that Apple was going to make changes to Apple TV, which “could include an LCD display” he said.

We previously mentioned about Apple designing a cheaper model iPhone without a touch screen, which seems completely viable for those wanting the sleek and sexy device but without a fat and sweaty wallet.

Rumor Bin Garbage: iPhone v1.1.3 firmware came out yesterday

It’s time to put yet another iPhone rumor to rest. Just several days ago we reported while quoting CNET France (who started this rumor) that iPhone firmware v1.1.3 was due to come out this past Saturday.

In recap, according to CNET, the new iPhone firmware was supposed to bring flashdrive-like storage support for the iPhone and a voice recorder feature.

Since the weekend is now over it’s safe to assume that in the worst case scenario this rumor had no basis behind it, and in the best case scenario that Apple has delayed the firmware’s release.

Whatever the case is, it seems that we’ll need to wait for a new iPhone firmware a bit longer.
