Today I was reading an cnet article where the senior worldwide product marketing manager at Lenovo explains why they are not bring iPad-alike devices with virtual keyboards to market. This is quoted from that article.
“We of course build plastic mock-ups that we show (to customers)…we had a slate form factor,” Majapuro said. “The feedback was that for (our) customers it will not work because of the need to have (a physical) keyboard.”
Majapuro said Lenovo even got feedback from high school kids. “These were 14-year-old kids, who, I thought, would be most willing to try a virtual keyboard but they said no, we want the physical (built-in) keyboard.”
It is a good thing to have build mock-ups and show it to customers. And it is a good thing to listen to 14 year old kids for their opinion whether they like a physical keyboard more than a virtual one. And of course they like a physical keyboard to play games! But there is one important point missing in this what-the-market-need analyses with all computer hardware manufacturers like Lenovo: They are only in control of the hardware part of the device. They have not any clue about the software running on it. More worst: hardware and the software are not optimized and melted as one synchronized team. A team that smoothly serves smoothly the user input of the human user. Do you remember Steve Ballmer was laughing loud, saying the iPhone will not make it without a physical keyboard? Exactly, a software manufacturer has no clue how to optimal use the hardware their software has to interact with. In this case it was the brand new Apple multitouch screen with a piece of optimized Apple software. You get it? Apple and the iPhone is successful because Apple is both hardware and software manufacturer. That is the missing point. The Apple iPad will be successful just because both hardware and software will work like a team, optimized to serve the human user. And the final joker are the apps. 100.000+ more or less useful programs will remind the human user what a useful device it is.

Q: Do you use mind mapping as a tool to understand complex problems with many dependancies? A: Yes, I am one of those drawing big tree branches in the mind map way in my paper notebook. Q: Well lucky you, since February 18th there is the iMindmap Mobile [App store link] free app. Q: What are the features: A: This app is officially endorsed by the inventor of Mindmapping -Tony Buzan- and includes functions like Add, move, enlarge and shrink branches – you can even add box or child branches, change their colour and also select the background colour of your map. In Speed Mind Map Mode you can capture your inspiration even more quickly and easily. Zoom in or out on any part of your map with a simple pinch. Q: I it compatible with my desktop software? A: It is compatible with iMindMap desktop, allowing you to Mind Map on the go then email your maps from the iPhone to your inbox, which you can develop further using iMindMap desktop when you are back at your computer. Do you prefer to Mind Map in landscape or portrait? Rotate your phone to draw in the style that suits you and simply pan around your map with a simple swipe of a finger! The coolest thing is, it is free and you can start straight away on your iPhone. Q: How much does it cost you to put that tiny searchbox on your iPhone web browser? See photo inside the red square. A: $100 million a year! According to a source of businessinsider, Google pays that money annually to Apple to be on the iPhone. Also interesting is the deal of Google Maps on the iPhone. Because Google and Apple are more and more competitors because of Google’s move to the Nexus One smartphone. Quoting the words of that the article and the source:
“when Apple first introduced the iPhone, it hammered out its deal for Google Maps in two weeks. When Apple prepared to launch the iPhone 3G with GPS a year later, it was a six-month process “full of acrimony” to get the maps deal finished. Google wanted access to all sorts of data from the maps, but Apple didn’t want to give it up, according to this person.”
How it works out with the next generation iPhone 4G and the new iPad is a big guess. Maybe we are “BINGing” in stead of “GOOGling”…
