New iPod touch Does Include Microphone Support

When Steve Jobs introduced the new iPod touch last week, he mentioned that it would work with a mic'd headset, just like the iPhone does. However, there has been some skepticism surrounding the iPod touch's capabilities. Thankfully a forum member at MacRumors has been able to confirm that the new iPod touch will indeed work with a microphone for applications that make use of one. This leaves the possibilities open for VoIP and other voice applications on the iPod touch which has many users excited.

Follow the Election Anywhere

Now there’s a cool new way to follow the 2008 Presidential election anywhere you go. Today I discovered a rich, data-packed app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that displays updated polling data, both nationally and state-by-state, for the presidential campaign. It’s called Election ‘08, and can be downloaded here. It’s free, and it requires at least the 2.0 version of the iPhone/Touch OS.

This iPhone app lets you track the campaign anywhere you go.

This iPhone app lets you track the campaign anywhere you go.

Election ‘08 contains the latest national tracking polls, and performs an algorithmic calculation of who’s winning currently in each state based on multiple available polls in that state. Then, it generates an electoral vote projection. It also gives the sources of the polls, and provides recent and historical data for context.

Some iTunes commenters complained that the app’s polling data was stale, but today, it seems up to date.

The program, from a company called Chimp Software, lets you view the data in a variety of ways — most recent data, alphabetical by state, battleground states only, or in lists arranged by each candidate’s strongest states, in descending order (McCain is cleaning up in Utah, Obama is uncatchable in DC.)

If you care about politics, and understand that polls aren’t perfect, Election ‘08 can put a snapshot of the political horse race in your pocket.

iFixit Dismantles iPod Touch, Finds Bluetooth Chip, Microphone Support

Not long after Steve unveiled them to the world, iFixit got their hands on one of the new iPod touches and did what comes naturally to them: cracking it open and gawking at it's insides after dismantling it down to it's core components. Luckily for us, they posted pictures of the entire process for us to gawk at too in the form of a tear-down walkthrough.

Why iPod touch will never be a major gaming platform

Handhelds battle

The iPod touch segment of Let’s Rock was particularly notable for Apple’s attempts to position the device as a major gaming platform. “It’s the best portable device for playing games,” claimed Jobs. Apple’s website now calls iPod touch the ‘funnest iPod ever’, and talks about its ‘hundreds of games’. This emphasis on gaming, along with the demonstrations we’ve seen from various developers, appears to be positioning iPod touch alongside Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS, rather than talking about mobile gaming as though iPod touch has any relationship whatsoever to a certain smartphone and cell-phone gaming in general.

There are arguments in favor of this belief. Games have proved phenomenally popular on the App Store. They’re also cheap, relatively plentiful, and simple to get on to your iPhone or iPod touch. Also, crucially, Apple’s solution betters Sony’s and Nintendo’s by allowing updates to games—something owners of the abhorrent DS port of The Settlers no doubt wish were true of their platform.

The problem is, iPod touch is only ever going to be a niche concern in the gaming space. Find out why after the break…
