Since the day Apple announced iPhone 2.0, the iPhone-Dev Team has been hard at work looking for exploits and perfecting their jailbreak method. Now that the software is released to the public, the Team is spending every waking moment on perfecting a solution to once again open the iPhone to third party apps and hacks. The current method allows Installer.app and Apple’s App Store to run side-by-side without a problem. The new Pwnage Tool also sports a more polished interface than previous versions.
Thanks to popular demand, the team has released yet another video which shows a jailbroken iPhone 3G. Read on for the video.
We were all expecting it of course, but nobody has been sure when we’d see the first signs of it. Fortunately for us, the Dev Team have shown off a bona fide jailbreak on the iPhone 3G (and by extension, any device running firmware 2.0).
Don’t get too excited just yet though. It’s not yet ready for prime time; as the Dev Team have said, they are putting it through some extensive testing to make sure that it doesn’t end up bricking anyone’s device, especially in light of the various bugs and issues that some 3G owners have been reporting their devices experiencing.
Nevertheless, the video, seen below, demonstrates that your gleaming new iPhone 3G (or your not-quite-so-gleaming first-gen iPhone or iPod Touch running firmware 2.0) will soon sport that familiar Installer icon that you’ve come to know and love. Of course, there are almost certainly going to be a lot of apps that are incompatible with the new firmware, so we’re in for an all new season of Dead App Hunter while we wait for toolchain devs to update their software for 2.0 functionality.
In the mean time, please enjoy this moving picture.
Veteran iPhone hacker and current Google employee George Hotz is back in the blogosphere, now that the 3G is in the hands of many, to address the question of an unlock for Apple’s shiny second-generation iPhone.
You’ll recall Friday’s report that the iPhone Dev Team are updating Pwnage to jailbreak and/or unlock iPhones running firmware 2.0. It looks quite promising and there are going to be a lot of excited people awaiting its release. However, the big caveat, according to Geohot, is that there is currently no way to unlock the 3G iPhone — only first-gen iPhones running 2.0. The new baseband on the iPhone 3G — the part that was exploited to allow the unlock on first-gen devices, and which has not been updated on those first-year phones — currently has no known exploits, and while there are known exploits to jailbreak it, unlocking is an entirely different matter.
Geohot poked a derisive finger at the Dev Team for “sitting on” the latest Pwnage, but the Dev Team shot back explaining that they are taking their time with the release to make sure that everything kosher and it doesn’t go bricking a bunch of nice new Jesus Phone 3Gs. Just the same, Geohot has decided to create his own jailbreak solution for OS 2.0, called YiPhone — a dig at Zibree’s ZiPhone — and has even placed a counter on his blog to count down when he will release it, which is suppose to encourage the Dev Team to hurry up and release Pwnage. George’s counter runs out at 6:00pm EST on Tuesday, the 15th.
The Dev Team are confident however that they will be able to find an exploit in the new baseband, so an unlock is inevitable. It’s just going to take some time before they can suss it out. Proud new 3G owners and hopefuls wanting to use the device on another carrier, be patient. By now, you should be used to this stuff taking its sweet time.
The iPhone-Dev Team announced on Thursday that they do have a working jailbreak method for the iPhone 2.0 OS. After posting their “video proof” which showed the latest version of the PwnageTool, some became skeptical that the Team hadn’t done what they were claiming.
In order to dispel any doubts of their accomplishments, the iPhone-Dev Team has posted yet another video, this time showing off a jailbroken iPhone running 2.0 apps and Cydia. Video below.
Windows users have practically been given the cold shoulder when it comes to Pwning their iPhone. The WinPwn project launched to try and help out, by porting the Pwnage tool to Windows, which up until now has been a Mac only affair. The beta for WinPwn launched last month, with a final version promised in the next few days.
The promise came about a month late, but it is finally here now. Not only is it here, but it packs a large number of improvements over the beta that we saw last month. The software is totally free, and allows you to take control of your device. Features that it has allows you to load custom ROMs and change out the boot logo etc.
The new version of the tool is available now. You can get it from WinPwn.com. The software does have the potential to brick your device, so please if you do not know what you are doing, read up on the tool, or just avoid using it.
