No Microsoft “ZunePhone” iPhone killer, says Bill Gates

Although it’s been long rumored that Microsoft is working on a “ZunePhone” iPhone killer, outgoing Microsoft chairman Bill Gates stated that it’s not so.

In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published on Wednesday he is quoted as saying “No, we won’t do that [release an iPhone competitor]. In the so-called smart phone business we will concentrate solely on software with our Windows Mobile program.”

We have partnerships with a lot of device manufacturers from Samsung to Motorola and this variety brings us significantly more than if we would make our own mobile phone,” he explained Microsoft’s point of view.

At the same time, in his last Sunday address at the CES 2008 he announced a “digital decade” of telephones, televisions and cars that respond to voice and touch. “This is the area that people underestimate the most,” he said.

And it’s worth noting that only a year ago Bill Gates was of completely other opinion towards touch screen powered devices. When asked whether he would buy an iPhone during an interview he responded “Well, of course, I’m the wrong person to ask. I like to dial numbers with one hand, and maybe I’m the only one. The phone space is where we think software will be the critical element. If there’s anything good about the iPhone, it’s software.” (story).

It is very simple and easy to use. All that the user really needs to do is to choose the mobile and data that needs to be transferred, after which iTunes transfers it onto your iPhone or iPod, depending on the type of data, of course.

That is how Nova Media’s, Jan Fuellemann, PR spokesperson describes their product: “This little jewel takes care of the complete communication process, from connecting the cell phone to saving the files in the appropriate locations on the Mac.”

System requirements: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (10.5.2 or higher for Leopard).

Initially Fone2Phone will cost Euro 12,52 plus VAT (approximately $19 U.S.). After January 31 2008 will cost Euro 16,72 plus VAT (approximately $25 U.S.). A demo version will be available on January 14.

You can already preorder or buy Fone2Phone at Nova Media’s website.

Windows Mobile Flirts with iPhone (via PointUI’s Home)

iPhone World Ad: Unlimited iPhone Downloads!.

Assuming you’re one of the many (slowly dying breed…) Windows Mobile users, you probably get the occaisional “Wow, why don’t you have an iPhone yet?” and shrug it off. Then again, why would you read a website based upon iPhones? I thought so, you sly dog, you.

pointui.jpg

Home, made by PointUI, turns your Windows Mobile into an iPhone-like state, with alot of the same capability and apps that you don’t currently get access to. Mainly, added is the ability to widen the area used to activate options and sliders, so you don’t need to use a stylus this time around.

Home allows you to one-touch activate calls, emails, text, and music, as well as easily manage sound, wireless, and battery functions. Additionally, the ability to switch between running programs instantly. See? If you only had an iPhone by now, you wouldn’t need this software…

This is only a small amount of the features available: A full list is available on Home’s website here.

Sony to challenge Apple iPhone’s multitouch screen

You know that things are getting hot in the touchscreen industry when Japanese giant Sony is showing off a multitouch prototype LCD display that beats the iPhone’s capabilities.

tech.co.uk reports on having had a chance to see Sony’s latest touchscreen display prototype — it handles five inputs at a time, which is two more than Apple iPhone can handle.

According to tech.co.uk, using the multitouch screen using three fingers was much easier than using one or two (like you would with your iPhone).

Sony’s new LCD measures 3.5 inches in diagonal with a 640 x 480 screen resolution and has optical sensors embedded in the screen. If Sony Ericsson was to use it, it could surely be a worthy competitor to Apple’s iPhone.

Could mobile phone displays be one day as simple to use as this multitouch touchless sensor screen demonstration?
