French iPhone spotted; no 3G

French?  Want an iPhone?  Well, Crunchgear France have been digging around like grubby beavers and apparently turned up this photo of the upcoming iPhone for the country.  Supposedly exclusive to Orange France and costing €300 ($416), it’s pretty much the same model as available in the US, meaning no 3G sadly.  Also distressing is word that Orange France won’t be providing any sort of unlimited data plan, as AT&T do in the US, meaning any sort of slow slow surfing while on the continent would be an expensive proposition.

Apple tipped as latest bidder in 700MHz spectrum auction

Over at our fledgling sister blog Google-Phone.com they’ve been obsessing over the search giant’s possible leap into ownership of the 700MHz network spectrum that goes up for grabs next January; so far the key competitors have been the traditional telcos (and they really haven’t liked Google’s push for “open access” clauses to be added to the winner’s contract) but things could get really interesting if, as Business Week reports, Apple is considering throwing its metaphorical hat into the ring.

Does Apple have its sights set on the 700MHz spectrum?

According to the report, two (unnamed) sources have informed Business Week that Steve Jobs has been discussing taking part in the auction and moving the until-now hardware and software company into a new role as telco.  Of course, just as this would be a step into the relative unknown for Google, similarly analysts are partially sceptical of Apple’s potential strength in this fresh area:

“Even for companies like Google, the economics [of owning a network] are barely intelligible … For Apple, this seems highly implausible” Amol Sarva, CEO of Txtbl

Euro-iPhone rumor: O2 takes Apple contract in UK

Euro-iPhoneAh, another chapter to the Euro-iPhone rumourfest.  Latest is the news that UK carrier O2, according to one major cellphone retailer, has “‘taken the deal on the table from Apple” in an attempt to prevent arch-rival Vodafone from clinching the exclusive contract.

“‘It is the world’s worst kept secret that the have the deal but it is a question of whether they take it out to the wider channels” Anonymous major UK retailer

Some analysts have speculated that the announcement will be held at the former Millennium Dome, now renamed The O2 and used as a concert arena, multi-screen cinema and exhibition space, sometime this month.

Rumor: iTunes Kiosks Popping Up Sometime After Wednesday?

So someone has gone and started a rumor that other than Apple’s music player line receiving a much needed update, we might begin seeing iTunes kiosks in retail stores. Personally I don’t think this is all that likely and here is why.

itunes kiosk

First, one thing Apple has always been really good at is learning from its predecessor’s mistakes. I personally have yet to see a kiosk based service of any kind take off, and the target audience for such a convenience makes a kiosk kind of a backwards approach since most of their iTunes customers already use a PC to download their music.

Jobs rumoured to announce custom ringtone software at Special Event

Someone has been sneaking Apple news to the Silicon Valley Insider, and if you’re a Beatles fan and a card-carrying iTunes addict you won’t be pleased to hear it.  Apparently their source has told them that, contrary to some predictions, Steve Jobs won’t be announcing the Beatles back-catalogue on iTunes next week; instead, it’ll be the excitement of a new device and an official piece of software that’ll allow you to make ringtones from songs you’ve already bought.

Custom ringtone software may be an official download from Apple next week
