MacBook Touch mockup by fan artist

Looking quite a lot better than the thrown-together mockup David Sieger used to illustrate his theory of an upcoming iPod Touch-based MacBook tablet, possibly reviving the Newton name, this fan-made creation manages to capture the current state of Apple design.  They’ve even developed the idea of an iMac style docking station into which an Apple sub-device would slot so as to allow access to full-sized peripherals.

“[T]he Keyboard Wireless Dock connects to the dock using Wireless USB. It also has a bigger hard drive, some sort of DVD player/burner, inputs for your USB and Firewire devices. The whole keyboard part itself is used as a large multitouch track pad. Since the keys need to be depressed when hit, you can do lighter touches as you move across the whole thing” Design’s creator

MacBook hacked in 15mins into a MacTablet

If the news that the Modbook is shipping fills you with little more than sorrow that your savings don’t amount to the $2,290 required to get one into your grubby, artistic hands, then how about DIY surgery on your current MacBook to add in some Wacom-powered touchscreen joy.  Over at Instructables there’s a guide for doing just that, with an Apple G4 that has seen better days integrated with a Wacom USB tablet via some tape and software tweaking.

Axiotron Modbook Mac-based Tablet finally shipping

Those people who couldn’t wait for Apple to release an official Mac Tablet, and who instead pre-ordered Axiotron’s Modbook alternative, will be getting a New Year treat as the company announces the pen-based OS X portable is finally shipping.  We first wrote about the Modbook - basically an Apple MacBook Pro rebuilt with a Wacom touchscreen digitizer to make a tablet - almost a year ago today, but the $2,290 device suffered a number of delays prompting many potential customers to hit the refund button.

iPhone Intelligent notification

Here's an interesting article. SV

A new application from intelligent notification vendor MIR3 promises to enable IT administrators to use an iPhone to manage, send and receive notifications from anywhere there's connectivity. The move suggests Apple's mobile phone may break into enterprise applications sooner than expected.

"Lopez says the iPhone's UI could be particularly well suited to run applications that require users to fill out forms, close out help desk tickets, or retrieve information on clients or locations. Physicians or nurses could also benefit from an iPhone-based app that enables them to manage patient health records via an iPhone or iPod touch. "The iPhone could be treated like a tablet without the pen," Lopez says."

ASUS: ‘We’re building Apple a Tablet PC’

Someone at ASUS has either loose-lips or delusions of grandeur; Crave has been told - from within the company, no less - that they’re helping Apple to build a tablet version blending the best of MacBook Pro power and iPhone screen technology.  Now Crave, like every jaded tech site, is wary of Apple rumors and especially of those which promise something so mythical as a touch-interface laptop, but even on a second information dig their ASUS source was still protesting the story’s authenticity.
