It seems that iPhone firmware v1.1.3 contained a few more hidden features than what Steve Jobs revealed at MacWorld 2008.
According to the official Gmail blog:
The built-in Mail app on the iPhone will now use IMAP to access your Gmail account, rather than POP, like it used to. IMAP is way better — it keeps your mail in sync wherever you read it. If you read a message on your iPhone, it will be marked as read in your Gmail account. If you move a message to a folder on your iPhone, it will be moved to that label in Gmail. If you delete a message on your iPhone, it will be moved to the Trash in Gmail and permanently deleted in 30 days. This is different than what used to happen! Before, deleting a message on the iPhone had no effect on your Gmail account. But now, delete actually deletes!

If you want mail you delete on your iPhone to get archived in Gmail rather than moved to the Trash, you can manually set up IMAP using the “Other” menu option and follow the instructions in the Gmail Help Center or in our instructional video (below).
If you have already manually configured your iPhone to access Gmail using IMAP via this “Other” menu option, then nothing will change for you, and you’re good to go. (When you delete a message on your iPhone, it will get archived in Gmail, not moved to Trash. Just as it always has.)
And in additional hidden features, Gizmodo reports that the iPhone’s SMS archive’s size was raised from 1,000 to 75,000 messages (which is quite a lot of messages), and that one of the other new additions is support for two finger typing — which means you can for example press shift and a button key at once, resulting in capital letters.

Our sister site iPod Touch World reports that iPod Touch firmware v1.1.3 was apparently already broken into.
A video posted online (which you can see below) shows some new iPod Touch firmware v1.1.3 features along with installer.app running, which could mean only two things — iPod Touch v1.1.3 was already jailbreaked. Or someone made a very clever fake video.

Whichever the case is, this gives hope that iPhone’s v1.1.3 firmware will be just as easy to break into and we could see compatible jailbreak software very soon.

This week at Macworld 2008, Twentieth Century Fox released a Special Edition DVD with Digital Copy for iTunes of the Family Guy “Star Wars†parody Family Guy Presents: Blue Harvest.
Consumers who purchase Blue Harvest with the additional Digital Copy of the movie can effortlessly transfer a copy of the film to their iTunes library and then view on a Mac, PC, iPod or iPhone.
Fox is also planning a similar release of Hitman on March 18th.

The new iTunes Digital Copy provides a consumer friendly way to transfer a DVD purchase to a user’s iTunes library. Once a customer buys the DVD, they insert it into their computer, enter a unique code into iTunes, and iTunes automatically copies the movie to their iTunes library within minutes, after which it can be viewed on the iPhone.

Security experts are seriously concerned with the first iPhone OSX scareware-MacSweeper that we recently reported on, which is basically a Mac version of Cleanator.
As mentioned before the trojan removes third party iPhone applications if you try to remove it. However, it works only on these iPhones that have been modified or opened through a security hole in the system (jailbreaked). Experts’ main concern is not the MacSweeper itself, but more dangerous attacks that can be performed by hackers after they gather more information and gain more experience using that trojan.

As Dian Schaffhauser, an editor at Web Worker Daily writes: “The fear is hackers may be experimenting and gathering research that will increase the dangers of a more malicious attack in the near future.”
Furthermore, she writes that the iPhone should be left on the dresser in the morning. She also offers several reasons why the device isn’t a good corporate tool.

While not really iPhone news, on Tuesday at MacWorld 2008 Apple presented its Time Capsule, a new product created to accompany the Time Machine automatic backup feature of the OS X 10.5. The new OS X Leopard was introduced last October. Its Time Machine automatically backs up the contents of any Mac or other Apple device to an external hard drive.
Time Capsule is a swift combination of an 802.11n network access point and a hard disk drive. As Steve Jobs says: The device is a “full AirPort Extreme base station†combined with “a server-grade hard driveâ€. It allows its users to find and restore lost files or even the whole system.

Apple’s Time Capsule connects to a computer wirelessly through dual-band antennas for 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies. It has one USB 2.0, one Gigabit Ethernet, and three Gigabit LAN ports. Time Machine also offers Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption, and a built-in NAT firewall that support NAT-PMP for Leopard’s Back to My Mac feature. According to Apple, it can connect to print wirelessly from a USB printer. The device has a built-in power supply.
Time Capsule will be available in February in two versions: a 500GB for $299, and a 1TB for $499.
