
AT&T's free Wi-Fi for subscribers to their iPhone data plans sounds great and all, and goodness knows we've been waiting for it long enough, but you have to jump through quite a few hoops to access it. Now it turns out that not only do they require cell data access, but the complicated process may make some users unable to use it.

We were pretty excited to hear about AT&T's free Wi-Fi for all iPhones subscribed to one of their data plans, but it doesn't surprise us that there's a catch. If you thought you could just wander into any Starbucks and sit down to enjoy some Wi-Fi, think again. Using their connection requires that you authentication, which you'll need a cell signal to complete.

AT&T has finally announced that all iPhone owners will now have access to free Wi-Fi at any AT&T hotspot in the country. This news comes after several false alarms in which AT&T prematurely announced the deal and then quickly offered a retraction. The notification is coming via text-message which AT&T began sending out to iPhone owners today. The message reads:
"AT&T Free Msg: Your Apple iPhone now has free AT&T Wi-Fi access at
thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks*. For info visit
www.att.com/attwifi"

Some users have been experiencing problems with their iPhone's Wi-Fi connectivity. Users have reported instances with both iPhones and iPhone 3Gs where it suddenly can't locate an existing local network. Thankfully, Apple seems to be replacing the affected units for users who bring their iPhone to the Genius Bar, noting "hardware issues".
