Is this a photo of an upcoming MacBook?
After talking up the benefits of a sub-$1,000 notebook, the rumor mill is now soft-peddling the idea as everyone waits for Cupertino’s notebook event slated for 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. ET).
In a post claiming what will and won’t appear, Daring Fireball blogger John Gruber calls analyst speculation of $800 notebooks so much “jackassery” leading up to Tuesday’s unveiling.
Gruber and others are talking of Apple lowering to $999 the price of the 2.1 GHz MacBook which had cost $1,099. In addition, two new MacBook Pros and MacBooks will be introduced. Also rumored: a glass trackpad that also acts as a trackpad button and the replacement of Intel’s graphics chipset for NVIDIA.
“We would be surprised if they didn’t have a $999 MacBook option” for investors, Piper Jaffray Apple hardware analyst Andrew Murphy told Cult of Mac Tuesday.
“If not, (Apple) has some explaining to do,” Murphy said.
He bases his belief on Apple’s prior statements of a “product transition” prompting lower margins.
Monday, Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimated Apple could gain up to 69 percent in potential revenue if a sub-$1,000 notebook is released.

Better late than never: Oxford and Cambridge have joined scores of prestigious universities around the world making lectures available for free on iTunes.
So far, iTunes U offerings from Oxford include J. Craig Venter on genomics and and intro series about the university narrated by noteworthy alum, ex-Monty Pythoner Michael Palin. It will expand to 150 hours.
Rivals Cambridge allow users to download over 80 Naked Scientists “enhanced podcasts” (not sure we want to think about what the enhancing involves) by Dr. Chris Smith.
Oxford Vice Chancellor John Hood said, “We hope that this service will make Oxford’s diverse range of audio and video material more widely accessible to applicants, alumni, supporters of the University, and the intellectually curious.”

The App Store just gets weirder with every passing day. To celebrate, consider this the first in an occasional series of posts looking at the weirder stuff that’s popping up there.

10 seconds ago is a strange audio widget that records the ambient sounds coming in through the mic, delays them by, um, ten seconds, and plays them out through the speaker. Or, as the app’s maker puts it:
“When you try, don’t you think your vision sometimes hinders your concentration on the sound? If so, then try this tiny app.”
Couldn’t have explained it better myself. (There’s a pro version too, sonic delay fans.)

Assuming that’s not populationy enough for you, how about US Population Clock? Why did you make it, developer friend?
“Every US citizen should know the current population number of his or her country, which is why I have written this little app to keep everyone up-to-date.”
Oh. OK.

I know, some of you are reading this and thinking: “But WHERE OH WHERE are the dancing lizards?” Cue Let em dance! “Simple joy” say the devs. They’re not wrong.

Now then. What does Philosopher do? The dev site says:
“Philosopher is more than just a magic eight ball, it uses a sophisticated agent-relative deontological approach to determine whether or not an action is morally permissible. Philosopher applies a rule utilitarianism format to deontology values, and after taking several factors into account determines if an action should be done.”
Ohhhh kaaay.

Wait! One more! What about all those people who can’t remember how many days it is until their divorce comes through? Won’t somebody think of the divorcees-to-be? Oh, somebody has, with the release of Days to Divorce. Phew.
Found stuff that’s weirder? Let it seep into the comments.

Details on the OLO are pretty much limited to the picture, and the slogan “sorry, but your PC is out!” Whatever that means. It’s a good idea, but I’m skeptical, since it looks like there’d have to be some pretty serious hardware and software integration with Apple’s precious, and Apple does...
