Young Activists Camp Out for 1st iPhones in New York

My AT&T account tells me I’ll be eligible for a hardware upgrade on August 16th. I’ll probably wait at least until then to pick up a new iPhone 3G. And something tells me I won’t be disappointed.

Then again, I don’t have a sustainability agenda to push, as do a quintet of twenty-somethings calling themselves alternatively TheWhoFarm and Waiting for Apples, who began queuing up in front of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan on Friday. The group is going for the Guinness Book of World’s Records entry for “longest time waiting in line to buy something,” according to Fortune, and hopes to persuade the next President of the United States to transform the White House’s 17-acre lawn into an organic farm.

It’s not clear what effect the group’s affinity for Apple may have on the company’s efforts to gain acceptance with Enterprise users.

Japanese iPhone guided tour shows off character recognition

iPhone Japanese guided tour guyWe already expected Apple to post an iPhone guided tour on their Japanese website, but what we didn't expect (but should have) was the demonstration of the new character-recognition feature built in to the iPhone 2.0 OS firmware. Having already gone "gold," the new iPhone 2.0 OS will bring character recognition to countries with demographics less in line with "Apple Bob" and more like the decidedly more Asian-looking chap we see in this video.

Hit up the guided video for a Japanese take on the iPhone. Highlights are the echoing voice-over and the hybrid touch and keyboard character input mechanics - truly trick, and worth a look.

Apple Posts Japanese iPhone 3G Guided Tour

Apple posted their guided tour for the iPhone 3G a little while ago, but for those of us who don't understand English, Apple has posted a Japanese version of their iPhone 3G guided tour. While this probably isn't going to be all that important if you don't speak the language, it is kind of interesting, and they do a longer demo of the Chinese character recognition tool in the keyboard. You can check it out here.

iPhone firmware 2.0 to dramatically improve Javascript performance

Though iPhone has revolutionalized web browsing on a mobile phone, its javascript performance is quite poor, resulting in slow rendering of AJAX pages and a virtual inability to use JavaScript-heavy, web-based games or web apps. iPhone Atlas is reporting that with the latest builds of iPhone firmware 2.0, Apple has dramatically boosted JavaScript performance.
