Battery life tip for iPhone gamers

It’s certainly encouraging to see Apple providing ‘Bug Fix’ firmware updates every few weeks. For me at least 2.0.2 does indeed seem to iron out a few of the strange crashes and laggy keyboard issues. However, one huge ‘bug’ is the rather depressing battery life. There are numerous ways to squeeze every minute of life from the iPhone battery, but by far the best that I have discovered is Airplane Mode.

If you are about to dive in for an hour’s worth of gaming on Galcon, or looking to channel water droplet during train ride home in Enigmo, then Airplane Mode will greatly increase your chances of coming out of the experience having only lost 15-25% of your battery life.

Sure you’ll be out of contact for duration, but your extra focus might just help you on your way to that ever elusive score of 6,000,000 on Pinball RC!

Well that’s my top tip for gamers, what’s yours?

Sneak Peek: Neon Surge’s LED Football

If you’re a thirtysomething like me, you probably have fond memories from the haydays of portable games. Simon. Microvision. Split Second. And of course, Mattel’s LED handhelds.

Yep. Before Intellivision, there were Mattel’s LED handheld games, like Football, where you moved some LED dashes around a virtual field trying to make the next down and ultimately score a touchdown — or at least a field goal

How would you like to get that back without having to buy a physical unit off of eBay? Good, because Neon Surge want to bring the nostalgia to you with the pending release of LED Football. Deke your way through the opponent’s defense as you strive for yardage across a digital gridiron in your ultimate quest to reach their end zone. Use the buttons to move up, down, or to the right. Find yourself at the 4th and 30 with 4 yards to the next down and don’t trust your chances to break through the opponent’s formation? Go for a field goal.

Yeah, I know. Programming an LED football game is cake. I’ve made simple games like that so I’m familiar with how easy it is to scare up the code. But packaging it all up in a way that immediately and sharply brings back the heady aroma of melancholy nostalgia for the dog days of electronic handheld gaming? The beige plastic case, the chunky coloured buttons, the serrated difficulty switch, molded bezel, the 70’s typeface, the triangular screws, the battery cover, the peeling stickers on the back, the glow of the LEDs underneath a silkscreened plastic face, and the tinny beep beep of the piezo buzzer? Dude, that right there gives LED Football the touchdown and the conversion.

Neon Surge plan to submit this to the App Store some time next week barring any bug reports from the current private beta round, so expect it to turn up for a pittance at $0.99 in a week or two.

In the mean time, Neon Surge kindly passed over a beta copy, so check out a couple of sweet screenies. (Note that as this is beta, things are subject to change — but frankly, this thing is just about perfect.)

App Store Gems Convinces Developers to Donate a Days Worth of Revenue

The folks over at TapTapTap.com released a new website they call App Store Gems, which brings more needed attention to applications that deserve it.

What’s more is, the App Store Gems team got in touch with the first five application developers and asked them if they’d like to donate a full day’s worth of revenue to charity, and all five of the developers had agreed upon doing so, which is fantastic.

A quote from John Casanta via TapTapTap.com:

In the App Store, one of the problems developers are facing is getting more attention for their apps. We’ve run into this and even though we’ve had some good results the past week or so through various efforts, we’re continuing to push things as hard as we can. A few weeks ago infamous Mac developer, Austin Sarner was brainstorming with me about how we could get more exposure for our apps, especially since he just released his Pennies budget tracking app for the iPhone.

One of the things we came up with was a co-operative advertising campaign. So we explored the possibilities and started a medium-sized campaign through Macworld to test things out. We gathered a few other of our developer friends and got a print ad, along with some banner ads going. And today the print ad comes out in the magazine.

And one important thing we all decided to do was donate all of our earnings for AppStoreGems.com’s debut today to charity. The charities we’ve each chosen are:

Congratulations App Store Gems, you’ve helped make this world a better place — even if it was just a little bit more.

How To: Take Macro Shots with Your iPhone

It rather sucks that the iPhone doesn’t have macro-focus, doesn’t it?..

Actually, it does, and it’s as easy as opening your iPhone up (yes, this mod requires disassembly), scrapping a bit of glue, and turning the inner lens. That’s it! There are full instructions on how to do so just below.

Check out the full how to with photos here.

Hey cool, now you can take some beautifully detailed photographs with the crappy iPhone camera. Horrah!

If any of you readers decide to go along with the mod, please take some macro-photographs and share it with us all. We’d be delighted to comment on your photography.
